Get rid of the mags.
Keep the stock 10 rd fixed mag and feed it with 10 rd stripper clips. JMHO 27hand

Yep, the one that came on it from the factory!
oh, nevermind. seriously though, the aftermarket mags are pretty hit or miss. i've found that steel ones tend to be more reliable than the zytel ones. stovepiping of a live round tends to be the most common failure. if you just wanna play around and blast and don't mind clearing a jam here or there, they're ok to have. otherwise, I'd say stick with the original mag and stripper clips. I have about 7 SKS's and they all have the fixed mags back in them! Vince

Detachable magazines often have failures.
If anything I'd replaced the fixed 10rd with a higher # fixed magazine. I have seen fixed 20rd magazines, but can't remember if I've seen anything higher. |

Tom,
the only good hi cap for the SKS is one the Chinese made. It was a 20 round fixed magazine that replaced the 10 round fixed magazine. I believe the import company was Keng in GA. I looked into buying them a few years ago because I wanted more than 10 rounds as well. You will be able to indentify the 20 round chinese mags because they have a "star' stamped on the magazine. The "duckbill" 30 round SKS mags are junk. If you can find the Chinese star mags, you are g2g. |

20 rd fixed SKS mags look like this...as on my Chinese SKS:
![]() I have some spares, but unfortunately I'm not selling any. they may take some initial fitting, but once thats done, it just sits there, fed by stripper clips. I posted a ad on Subguns.com as a WTB, and got several for $25 each, NIW...so they are out there.

Yes, there were special variants of the SKS (SKS-D) imported by the Chinese that take AK magazines. Other than these, the reliability is spotty. If you need a weapons that uses 7.62x39 30-round magazines, reach for an AK, here's a convenient source for you.

![]() This Norinco Sporter is the style that takes the Ak-47 magazines. The mag in the upper left is the detachable SKS style. They are REALLY hit and miss, and I would agree with the others and go FIXED. My sporter works great, and has no problems with any AK mag I have tried.

Problem is, I don't have the stock 10 rounder so I'm trying to find a decent mag. I would prefer more than 10 just because it's poitically un-correct but if that's the best way to go I'll buy a Chinese 10 rd.
