Default A Stupid Question About AK-47 Mags

OK, I bought my first AK last week with 2 - 30 round mags and I have been wandering around the internet looking for new (and bigger) mags but some sites list them buy country, some don't mention anything about them.

My question is this, will any AK mag fit a Yugo AK or do I have to find Yugo mags?

Any magazine should fit any rifle, with few exceptions. I got some Romanian mags from the group buy here and they were pretty decent. The mags came from AIM. I think AIM has a sale going on right now on the Romanian mags. Might want to check them out.

All nation's AK/AKM variants work with all nation's AK/AKM magazines.

That being said, since there are few factory receivers available to us, some mags will fit better/worse in some guns than they will in others, because the most commonly available variants offered from CAI use US receivers, or because of varying degrees of workmanship on the opening of magwells in originally single stack rifles (WASR series).

They should all work fine 95%, but you'll just have to try them out. I wouldn't pay too much attention to the retailers descriptions, as most have them wrong anyway. They'll most likely say "Russian", or "Soviet" to describe any European mag.

If you are serious about identification, I suggest some AK specific collector's sites where people have them referenced by rib variations, markings, etc.

7.62 x 39 AK mags will fit most variants of 7.62 x39 AK's... exceptions would be low cap wasrs and different caliber AK's...

quick answer to your question is yes any AK mag will fit a yugo...

yugo mags do sometimes have a nice extra feature with the bolt hold open built into the mag and are normally manufactured a bit more heavy duty than some other mags..

Thanks for the replies, I thought something was fishy when I saw these sites listing them that way. I do understand about clips being somewhat different though, even with the two I got with the gun they act differently. The one clip sometimes gets "stuck" when you try and release it ... you literally have to pull on the release tab with everything you've got while the other one goes in and out flawlessly.

Thanks again for the answers ... loving this rifle big time but I have to get used to the 'quirks'

As others have said, any dub-stack steel 7.62x39 AK mag should interchange with any other of the same.

Issues arise with the .223 mags, and also some of the poly and resin mags where some can be a tad "chubby"; and so may need some sanding a bit to fit.

Also be advised that some steel mags may work great in one AK - but not in another. The designed-in slop of the AK family can sometimes be too much of a good thing.
