Uni the new HK 416 currently is chambered in 5.56 Nato (its marketed for law enforcement) however the new XM-8 that will be the new army gun hasnt be settled on for a caliber. The 416 tears down exactly as the current M4/M16. Just the gas system was changed. Still not sure what the army is doing but the current things i have heard from my best friend is that the 6.8 will be the new army round. From where ive read its got 80% of the power of the 7.62 nato in a size just larger than the 5.56. I also beleive Browning currently is working on a new M16/M4 style in the 6.8 as well.

The change is here all the army has to do is approve it and say we want these and then they just put them into mass production.

Heres a link to the XM-8. Its still a prototype as the army hasnt officially said yes we want them. But they can be easily made for 6.8.

Kenshin, Thank you for the link and the heads up here. I do appreciate it.

Jdlv, Last I knew Remington was making H.P. and S.P. ammo for the .30 Carbine. I'm not sure who else does though. It is still 110gr. and will even take deer at short range. I used an M-1 Carbine a few times back home to hunt with, where it is legal to do so, and I never stretched it beyond ".30-30 range". Back home though, you need to have only 10 rounds in a magazine. Simple fix if you have spare 15 round magazines.

Not all situations are going to call for the same weapon. Also, there are doubts that the HK416 will ever be easily available to peons.

On the other hand, the Robinson XCR is a nice alternative, readily available, reliable, and multi-caliber weapon. I definitely see one of these in my future, if I can manage to scrape together the cash.

You can get some role overlap between the M1 Carbine and AR platform via ammunition selection.

On the subject of body armor, it seems to be gaining popularity these days even amongst common criminals, home invaders, and so on.

Not sure where you are getting your info but the XM8 is deader than Hoffa and the US will never adopt the HK version of the gas piston operating system. Somewhere on google you will be able to find Colt's reply nicely recounting the history of the "new" piston system.

As for the 6.8 being the new round for the US Military, don't hold your breath. The heavier grain 5.56 round will be their solution for the foreseeable future.

As been said the .30 M1 Carbine was designed as a replacement to the .45 handgun to be used by those in the rear: cooks, drivers, etc.

FWIW.

The M-1 Carbine, was never meant to REPLACE the .45 is was supposed to Supplement it for the people in the rear.
