Sure! It really all depends on your preferences......
Whistle Piggies at 600 yards or more require a different type of gun than ones at 100 do.....figure out the farthest you are going to be shooting, and get a gun that will do that comfortably....you will get many different answers from 22LR, to .17HMR, all the way up thru .243 which I use, to .308, and 30.06, and even .50 bmg. Caliber really doesn't matter as much as shooter skill, and effective range of the weapon used......but most of all....HAVE FUN!

22hornet, 22mag would be fine if you keep it within range. For the critters you mention that 100yds and under. Fox and coon will be much closer anyway. BUT....keep in mind in PA G'Hogs have to be splatted with a rimfire in some places. I don't really now too much on that....but you can read up on it, or another member here will chime in. LISTEN TO THEM. If, you are allowed centerfire in your neck of the woods.....grab a 223.....since you only mentioned G'Hogs, Fox, and coon.

If, you are banned to only rimfire, look at the 17HMR or 22WMR....but no the limitations.

Good luck and have fun researching, shopping, shooting, and the G'Hog splattin!

Oh, just to stay on topic for scarecrow......I bust G'Hogs primarily with a 243.

I had a Hornet for ground hogs... it was too light at much more than 100 yds; if I didn't hit them just right they were hole divers. Now I use a 223 for close in - less than 150 - 200 yards - with much better results. Don't know for sure, but the 223 is probably a little louder than the Hornet (?).
