Default Recommend me a deer rifle and scope.

I'm looking to get back into deer hunting after about 11 years away from it. I need a rifle and scope! I think I'd like either a .270 or .308 and I'll be loading my own ammo.

I'd like to keep the whole package with scope under $900 if possible.

Thanks
Dave

Savage 110 in either caliber and a Nikon scope.

For a deer rifle, I agree with Lycan. Might as well not spend a whole lot of money on an expensive gun that has the smoothest action. The Savage will shoot as accurate or even more than alot of the others and are pretty tough. Nikon Buckmasters are pretty good glass for the money, and especially if you're not looking for a target or tactical style scope, there's probably not a reason to consider much else. If you want to spend a little more on glass, look at some of the Bushnell Elite 3200 or 4200's, or some of Leupold's mid range stuff. The Nikon's will serve you great, but just tossing those out there in case you care to try to stay in that price range and spend the money that you saved on the rifle in the glass. At $900, you won't have a problem, and could even look at a basic Remington 700 rifle. I'm a fan of the Remington 700's, but if brand isn't an issue, the Savages are a GREAT bang for the buck. Best of luck to you.

As much as it pains me I would have to agree with Lycan 100% on this one. The Savage is a really nice, accurate rifle right out of the box and you can tune the trigger to your liking. Add to that some really good glass like the Nikon and you really are good to go.

I have a Remington 700 in .30-06 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 scope... I absolutely LOVE this gun.

Wait until later this summer when FN reintroduces the Winchester M70. Top it with a leupold 2 x 7 VX II. I'd recommend it in .308 in order to take advantage of the short action.

I use a model 70 in 7mm-08 Remington

I have used 30-06, 270 , 30-30 and a few other cartridges for deer in the past and 7mm-08 Rem is what i like the best

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7_mm-08_Remington

As for scopes ive used expensive ones and ive used cheap bushnell scopes

it be honest ive never had a problem with a scope out in the woods
