I have a Springfield Armory Model 1898 ( 30-40 krag). Is this gun safe to shoot. It is in good shape and I have shot it once before more then 15 years ago but I wonder about the saftey of shooting and older rifle.

It would depend on the condition of the firearm. Assuming it is in safe working order and if you use ammo thats within the spec'd working pressures of the 30-40 Krag - you should be fine.
I occasionally shoot a 1878 Springfield 45-70 Trapdoor rifle. But I make sure the ammo I'm using is of blackpowder/level 1 pressures.

I take a Krag hunting every year. Great rifle. Have a gunsmith go over it. Have him look at the locking lug on the bolt real close. Remington and Winchester still make factory ammo although it is around $20 per box if you can find it.
You will like shooting it. Pretty accurate, nice recoil, and a super slick action. If you dont like it, let me know and I will take it off your hands.

It s funny, I just saw Guns and Ammo Tv and the had a Krag-jorgenson rifle I think 1868 or some thing. They said the same thing, good gun to shot with great action. I have a box of ammo and will look for more.

It has been going up every year for a long time now. About six years ago I could get it at Wal Mart for $14. Now if I ask for it, I get a real funny look from the guy behind the counter and a "what's that?" I didnt buy any last year, I reloaded. It was two years ago that I got it for $20. |

How much cheaper is reloading then buying Factory ammo?

Well, lets see. About $20 for a 100 count box of Hornady bullets. About $20 for a 1 pound bottle of IMR 4350 (this is the powder I use in the Krag). You will get about 150 to 200 loads out of a pound of powder. $3 for 100 large rifle primers. $0 for your once fired brass casings. About $30 to $40 for 100 casings if you have to buy them. So that would be about $33 for 100 rounds IF you have some casings and you average 200 rounds per pound of powder. $43 if you get 100 rounds per pound of powder. Add $40 if you have to buy casings. I do not think it would be worth it to buy casings. You would be better off to buy some factory ammo, shoot it, and then reload it. You can pick up a cheap LEE single stage press kit for under $100 if you do not have a reloading set-up. |
