How much cheaper do you think you can get...I'd say $279 is doing pretty good.

Yes $279 is pretty good. Last year Bass Pro put them on sale for $199 right before xmas. I was hoping someone would put them on sale again.
I just got a reply from an email I sent to a Bass Pro store Manager. He said that last year's sale was due to a special buy from Savage because they were pushing the new models. So I guess I won't find a better deal. Buds Gun SHop online has them for $247, but with $25 shipping and whatever my dealer charges to receive it, the savings is gone. Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait and see if I get another Wal-mart gift card from work for xmas. Then I'll buy it from there. Thanks |

I stopped at Dicks last night. They had the 30.06 and 270 for $269. I asked about ordering the .308. He said that they were not going to be carrying Stevens anymore and could not order it. He marked the 30.06 down to $249 for me, so I bought it. Gun, Paperwork, box of 220gr Core-lokts and scope bases I was out the door for under $300.
Not too bad I don't think. I also talked a lady into buying a 10/22 for her husband while I waited. |

![]() 220 grainers are awfully heavy though. Most people go with 150's or 180's. I've never even seen a box of 220 grain .30-06.

Well RP, I'll look again, but I'm pretty sure they are 220gr. I only bought the cheapest they had. $15.99 plus 10% off all Remington ammo, it was like $13 and change. I'm not really woried about what I'm going to shoot just yet. I just need to go shoot the thing.
As far as the caliber. I also found out that I can still get a 308 barrel for this gun as well. I actually have more options for calibers with the LA than the SA. |

It's not that the 220 grainers you won't work. They're just going to kick harder than the lighter bullets. A couple of guys I know upstate really like the 220's for black bear.

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal to me djturnz. The only suggestion that I would make would be to shoot primarily with the weight of bullet that you intend to use the most. A box of 220s won't hurt you any, but you'd probably be better served shooting 180s for most big game. Good luck, be safe, have fun, and post a pic when you have the time.

put a deposit on a 200 in 30.06 at a local shop, price, 267.95. When I was quoted that price while shopping by phone.(lot cheeper than buying gas) I said, " I'll be right up". diesel
