I can certainly understand the mil-surp attraction; have my Garands, Hakim, and once had a K98 and M-1 carbine that I stoopidly sold.

Plus the Mosin prices have looked good - every funshow seems to have racks of them at affordable prices.

Guess whats kept me away is that they'r like 4-feet longer than the 7-foot Hakim I have and would shoot pretty much like the Mauser I regretably sold. And last thing I probably need is another corrosive mil-surp caliber to have to accumulate.

All that said, which Mosin should the "casually interested" Mosin newbie go after for the best bang-for-the-buck?

TIA!

I like the history associated with them, not to mention there cheap as hell and damned accurate, provided you can clean all the cosmo off. fell in love with it the first time I shot it. Went to rossville game lands range at darn near dusk and fired one round (just had to you know). The 3 foot mzle flash is what did it for me.

For some unknown reason my 10yo son just loves to shoot Joe Smith's moisan at the group shoots. I cant fathom it. Its like a giant bolt action log cannon.

The current crop of arsenal refinished M44 carbines are plentiful, cheaper and usually in very good condition. However the M38 carbine, without the permanent attached folding bayonet, seems a better overall package to me. The M38 is about 40" in length and weighs 7 1/2lbs......not near as long or heavy as the M91/30.

I was into collecting Mosins for a while. I haven't bought any lately. I'm glad I stockpiled the ammo when it was cheap and readily available
