If you don't already have one, a good HD shotty. I like my Mossberg 590 Special Purpose
You can get one for about $400.00 OR- If you don't have one, I'd go with a good full sized 9mm 1st - Sig P226 2nd - CZ75 3rd - Beretta 92 FS My first choice would be a Sig P226. I'd get a used W.German stamped slide for about $400. - $500. I'd buy ammo with whatever you have left over. Have fun!

I'd set up a sweet AR and have enough left for an optic, mags and LOTS of ammo.
That's if we're talking guns. Otherwise i'd blow it all on hookers and booze.

Or a tricked out bolt gun in 25-06.
My uncle had a rem. 700 25-06 and I saw him shoot a deer with it at like 300 some yards when I was a kid. from then on I always wanted one. I couldn't wven see the damn thing and he drilled it in the head. since then it has always seemed like a mythical magic rifle I know ammo isn't widely available, but you can neck down 30-06 brass and roll your own.

If it were me, even though I have a long list of guns I want to buy, I would invest in getting set up with reloading equipment. I want to get started in this, and $1200 could be the start of a nice reloading setup and supplies for the calibers I shoot.
