At 500yrds, with original sights - you should be within minute of oil drum.

I came up with a 6-24x50 scope. Forgot to mention that part of the equation.
Oil drum isn't bad though for a start.

it all depends on your sights. I agree that with original sights you could probably hit a barn or something at 800 yards but only if you're good. They are very rugged guns with cheap ammo, you can get peep sights that go on the existing mount, or if you don't care about ruining it's authenticity you can tap the reciever and mount a scope or red dot scout-style. This would make the gun FAR more accurate. let us know what you can do with it. I bet it would be a good shooter at 100 yards with irons. But Joe Smith could tell you how they do with a red dot. He had on on his for a while.

Oh! if it's got a scope it should be a good long shooter. It's recoil isn't bad, but it has a heavy firing spring which might throw off long shots. I know the ammo can go hundreds of yards, just a matter of how well you can keep it on target. I also know that adding or removing the bayonette can affect the shots, so decide if you want it or not before you sight it in. Those guns are fun to shoot and make a hell of a bang, ammo is cheap and while I doubt it will be a tack driver, with a scope you can probably do pretty good.

I'm mounting in a custom made wood stock my friend is whipping up for a few bucks and I found a regular AK mounting bracket for the side of the new stock and an AK mount. I'm also getting the bolt handle bent 'sniper-style' to clear the mount and scope. To start I'm getting the ATI stock and mounting the same bracket/rig/setup on that while I wait patiently for the wood stock.
I'm going to test off a BAG to sight in for 200 yards and 'mil' out the rest. The bayonet is going to be OFF. This is the Hi-Rise mount:

First off, the mount I used with the red dot replaced the existing rear sight, and on my M44 was a little crooked. In addition, the recoil knocked it out of adjustment within the first hundred rounds of shooting.
While it was on there I was getting about 2 MOA at 50 yards with a rest. Didn't really try any farther out due to the sight loosening up. Not, for ammo only the best site by far is http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo.htm So my rifle with my ammo gives performance like this: ![]() So it WILL hit up to 500 yards (60" hold) and still have 1225 pounds of energy. Go for it...

Cool. I didn't like the 'rear-site' mount idea. Better to BOLT to the stock and reduce wiggle a little.
The 7N Russian ammo had an approx 55" 'drop' at 500 yards and 1789 ft. lbs. Here is a pic of another M44 in the ATI with a 'REAR MOUNT' scope. (this is not mine) but gives you an idea of 'modernizing' the M44.

I think 400-425 yards is a good range. About 1 mil-dot above target and WAM.
Drop is 35" at 425 yards for the 7n ammo according to the site and 1900+ fps and 1265 ft. lbs.. $180 +/- for 400 rounds 7N ammo. Good for TARGET work not plinking. ![]() Looking to hit a 18" high target about 12" wide.

http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinAmmo003.htm Is what I'm using and it's good quality stuff much cheaper than the sniper ammo. If you can find some you will save cash.
Good luck finding any though...
