Default lr .260h? over lr.308

So i posted this on ar15 but figured id ask you guys to

i had my heart set on a lr. 308 for a while but i did some reading and it seems like the .260 has better long range ballistics. Just wondering if you guys think maybe i should change my wish list around? The lr .260h seems like a pretty bad ass gun.

here is a chart on the 260 rem. it isn't all that great of a cartridge beyond 500yrds.

http://www.cpcartridge.com/260remB.htm

If you really want to go with something besides the 308 then you may want to look at the 260 Ackley improved. Other than the 260AI I can't really see a better all around choice than the 308.

It would depend on what your intended use for the rifle would be. If it is just for punching paper then the 6.5 seems to have an advantage over the others in the graphs. But if the rifle would also be used for other purposes such as hunting then the power advantage of the .308 would overshadow the slight advantage the 6.5 has in other areas IMHO.

the gun will be mostly paper punching. and maybe long range groundhog/other shooting. I'd also like to know it would be able take out a bad guy from some range if i needed it to.

In that case I would recommend the .308

If you moved to the 300wsm you could get the best of both worlds, power and flatter trajectory! I'd like to see that round put on those graphs????

Yeah, once you "go off of the reservation" of sticking to .223 or .308 there are LOTS of options.
