I'd just look at some picture threads and get a good idea of what you might like and try it out. We can't tell you how you'll like your rifle set-up. I'll mention with optics, Eotech and Aimpoint will be the best you can buy. primary Arms is a fantastic budget brands that still remains a quality piece. You can add a 3x, 4x 5x or 6x magnifier (I prefer a flip-to-side mount) if you want magnification.
But for a "SHTF" rifle, nothing is more important that reliability and spare parts. I'd start by buying an M16 BCG and "H" or "H2" buffer. Keep your original BCG for spare parts. Everything will be interchangeable. As far as quad rails, Daniel Defense, IMO offers the best out there.

Have you run and gun your rifle yet to know what you need? Plenty of folks like to throw shit on their guns and can't run it worth a damn because it is too heavy.
I hope this doesn't turn into one of those, "I want a gun that can do CQB and long distance and everything in between" threads...

I have shot out to 700 with it open sights and was pleased. I know what the rifle will do, just want to magnify the capabilities of it. D.D. makes great rails, but the are a bit rich. Don't want to do somthing twice, just want a reliable rebuild. As far as spare parts go, what goes on a mil-spec AR? I shoot brass 85% of the time(steel blows, need to get through some though). Another buffer, BCG and? The BCG is a common failure point? You guys have been a great help so far, thanks

I run a BCM BCG in my rifle. I bought my "H" buffer from BCM.
Mid-west industries seems to make some decent rails, along with Troy. I use a Daniel Defense so it's really all I know. My M&P15X came with a Troy rail. It was ok, but I wanted a 12" rail, and got the Daniel Defense Omega X 12.0 FSP at only $200 I must have got it at a good time or when it was on sale because I only paid $199 http://www.midwayusa.com/product/944...aluminum-black They're expensive, but WELLLLLL worth it.

Stick with non magnified optics such as the brands evorich mentioned. With a red dot, you should be able to effectively hit center of mass out to 300 yards if you zero at the 36 yard line - even further if you know how to do hold overs. Also, you can get a Knight's armament iron sight that can take you out to 600 yards.
I would advise against quad rails unless you need all four rails. Go with a modular system to reduce uneccessary weight. Troy makes great rails. Also Geissele is releasing a great option in a few months. No need to swap out the buffer if your rifle cycles fine. Use the money to invest in a better trigger and stock. You'll get the most improvements out of those mods. Also consider a compensator. Spare parts should include firing pins, springs, and bolt.

Modular hand guards allow you to mount rails where you need them and don't take up the whole hand guard. There is a big movement in this direction with manufacturers now. Look up troy trx extreme and you'll see what I'm referring to. Also look up the Geissele hand guard. I have a Stag rifle that came with a quad rail - if i had to do it again, I would've skipped the rail and bought another after market one. I personally like Gessiele triggers but I'm biased BC I know Bill Geissele. Most folks love his SSA trigger which is a two stage trigger that breaks at 4.5 lbs. I personally run the SSA-E which breaks at 3.5 lbs. I ran various Magpul stocks and like their CTR model. That being said, I recently switched to a vltor stock for my go to gun. I get better cheekweld with that stock and it only cost 50 at bravo company's website. I'm considering picking up another as a spare. You don't need a heavier buffer or spare buffer.

Modular? Is there somthing better than a quad? I have seen octagon styles but figured they were to taticool for me. Remember, I want a simple rifle that is reliable, has glass sights to 600, maybe a light, and possibly a laser.

This is a modular hand guard that i personally use: http://www.opticsplanet.net/troy-vta...FYeK4Aod9yc45w
Not suggesting you get the same one but more of suggesting that you don't need a quad rail to achieve what you're looking for. If this is truly a SHTF rifle, when are you ever going to engage targets beyond 200-300 yards? You're more likely going to use it at shorter distances. Know your application before accessorizing the rifle. There is no ''do it all'' configuration that I know of but there are some 3 gun set ups pretty darn close.
