I say again www.surplusrifle.com.
Don't alter it and the folks there can possibly steer you in the right direction for scoping.

I concur.
Millsurp rifles work just fine with irons. If they needed a scope they would come with them.

If I can group COM @ 200 yards I'm happy. The AR (in theory) is close to MOA so I'll try that out when I get a sight.

My K31 hits just below the bullseye with a center hold at 100yds. At 200yds and higher I'm told you need to start using a 6 o'clock hold. The original manuals on Swissrifles.com say something similar IIRC.

There is usually an armorer's mark on most K31s indicating the windage zero for that particular rifle.

All I did to finish the wood on mine was strip it down with aircraft stripper, steam out all the dents real good. I very light sand with 220 grit a good once over with super fine steel wool and about 10 coats of BLO+Turp and beeswax. Comes out like this...

so, I got one of the swiss slings that go with this rifle.
anyone got a good pic/description of how it is supposed to go on? I think I have it on right but I want to be sure.
It is different than the sling I use for CMP on my AR, how are you supposed to use these?

So I'm taking gun pics this morning and thought this would be a good opportunity to show off my new K31. I haven't even gotten a chance to fire it yet but I was pretty pleased with the cosmetic condition when it arrived so I don't anticipate anything too disappointing at the range. I just need a sling for it and maybe a good scope... we'll see.

clicky clicky.

I also bought enough GP11 ammo and stripper clips to kill several hundred invading fascists, or just have hours of expensive fun at the range.

-edit-

oh hey, can anyone tell me how to figure out how old the rifle is?

If anyone would like to know what year their K31 was produced, take a look at this page.

http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/schmidt_rubin.html#m31

Mine was produced in 1943. I just looked beneath the butt plate and found the original owners name on a card too! so amazing...
