SMOKY HILLBILLY1857 is on a distinguished road
Default Chinese sks ?

Howdy, I am new to this so here we go. As some people say we are dumb hillbillys. I have a rifle that looks like a sks, but it does not look like some I have seen in books and on the web. It has a scope mount on the left side of the receiver also, Chinese writing in the same area. The caliber is 7.62x39. The rifle does not have a place for a bayonet on the barrel . The rifle is in excellent shape. By the way, I guess I should say that I am not new to surplus firearms, because I have several ones of different origins . So I guess I should not play dumb. I appreciate any replies, and thanks for letting me joining your forum.

If you haven't been to Survivor's SKS boards, you may wish to check it out. SKS experts abound.

If you're a surplus guy, I'm sure you've seen this, but I'll include it, just in case...

Good luck. I hope you find you have something unique.

Someone may have put a different stock on it, so that's why it may not match the pictures you've seen. Most Chinese SKS will not have a bayonet. There's also a possibility it's a D or M model if it takes AK-47 magazines.

There should be an import stamp somewhere on it, usually on the barrel near the muzzle. It may be marked SKS, or Type 56.

Try the SKS forum emptymag mentioned above. Pictures would be helpful!

It may be a "Cowboy Companion" model that was imported years ago. Check these out:

About the SKS in general (note: take wiki with a grain of salt or two):
