There are really two factors that will determine the power (beyond the muzzle) if all else is equal.
Alright , one of us is nutz.

Yes , I'm saying the factors ARE even , if two different (or similar) rifles , chambered for the two different rounds (cartridges) , the 30-06 and 7.62 Russian , yet both fire the same 30 caliber , 150gr bullet , with the same ballistic coefficiant , at the same muzzle velocity , what's the diff at the finish line?
(make it a 3-way race if ya want to add the .308 Win.)

Sure you can, and many have.
I wouldn't because the trigger sucks. I don't feel like doing any trigger work, so I'd rather get a better gun. I'd use my K31 if I hunted anymore.

Well what do hunters call people who use military surplus rifles to hunt game?

    hahahahahahhaaaaa

City folk!!!!!!! Closet members of PETA....

Sure you can hunt with it, but I love my conditioned, handed down, scoped, 700.

Then there's the old iron sight 35.

Wars over man, Wormer dropped the big one.

Merry Christmas and I hope ya get a nice clean, hunting rifle. Spend a little, hand it down to the child you teach to hunt.

*Fudd is a terrible term for people. A label created by the anti hunting establishment to get the general public to believe all hunters are stupid and hunting is stupid. TRY to remember not to use the term. It hurts.
I was just thinking about getting a another Mosin Nagant, sporterizing it with a Monte Carlo stock and scope.

Well worth the time and money if you like to play around and have a few tools. Stock and scope mount with bolt mod. cost about 125.00 when we did ours. A friend cut and re-crowned the barrel at 22" for us. The whole project was very cheap and gave us a very affordable useable rifle that will shoot with our Rem. 700 that cost many times more.
IMHO a fun winter project which can tweak the noses of the snobs.

Sure if you already own the combo it will work. But if you haven't everything is just more and better for the 30-06 riflfe cartridge combination.

Either rifle or round can do the job but why bother with Mosin when the 30-06 is just more plentiful and easier to upgrade.

Either way, still a dead deer. (Providing you can find a live one.)

One big downside is the safety on the nagant rifles. Its hard to work as is, and harder with gloves on. Triggers can be dealt with very easily, if you know how to work a stone and some polishing compound. Wont be top shelf good, but it wont be bad either.
