I'm considering a buying an Enfield, I want it as a shooter not a wall hanger. Anyone have any opinions on which one to by or not to buy? Considering buying at the Harrisburg gun show in December.

Let the opinions FLY !!!

I know nothing of Enfield, but I can tell you a bunch of us here are planning on going to that show in December.

Check the calendar feature, and we can all meet up.

Maybe we luck out and can work together with a vendor to drop prices.

I'm no expert, what Enfield are you thinking about? P17 or P14.

Are you looking for a .30-06 Enfield or a .303 Enfield?

I've always been partial to the SMLE (.303) for no other reason than I like its looks, though I hate its sights. The No.4 Enfield in .303 is probably the better rifle (a 1930s update of the SMLE with a heavier barrel and better sights). The No. 5 (aka the "Jungle Carbine") is said to kick like a mule and is not known for accuracy.

I have no experience with the US Enfields.

If you care about such things, the bayonet for a SMLE is the old, long sword type. Again, I like the look.

Aim Surplus is selling Enfield 2A's chambered in NATO 7.62X51 with 12 round Mags for 169 bucks.

I just had my FFL order me one as I have been too damn lazy to get my C&R.

I think the hand pick (+ $10) the rifle one extra 12 round mag, FFL costs tax will total $250.

I should get it early next week. Since I bought a couple K of .308 NATO, I'll have to take out my FR-8 with this Enfield and see how they compare.

Later,

27hand

The no.4 mk 1 marked s42 U.S PROPERTY should be good for shooting as they were made by and sent to England under the lend lease act.

In the number 4 the Canadian Long Branch is often cited as the best made and most accurate.

I own three enfields. A No. 1 MK III, a No. 4 MK I and a P-17. If you purchase a No. 1 or No. 4 or any of the *British variants*, make sure you have a gunsmith check the headspacing. These rifles have removable bolt heads that come in three different sizes that can markedly alter the headspacing.

This is a Enfield I picked up new in the Cosmoline about 8 years ago. It came with the Bayonet as well. I wish I had bought a couple more at the time. If your interested in Enfields check out www.303british.com Steve Ridgewell runs the site and he's a real expert on anything Enfield. Lots of good information on that site. Bill T.
