Re: woodchucks
Bringing this back to the op topic, I have a savage model 12 in .223 I bought used and put a scope on it I had laying around and it has proven to be a very good groundhog executor. I have shot them out to 300, but have enough time at the range where I would shoot one at 500 if given the opportunity. Not to bad from a rifle I got 400$ invested. oh, and if you reload 50gr varmint grenades add a fireworks effect when looking through the scope!!

Re: woodchucks
I've dispatched them with a well placed .22 subsonic. That being said you have to be close. 17hmr does a decent job and gets you about the same range as a 22 mag, as long as there is no wind.
Anything bigger than that will work too, personally I'm on the lookout for a .223 bolt since I'm already set up to reload for that caliber. The resident Saiga snob

Re: woodchucks
Don't overlook your deer rifle (if you already have one) The 24 and 25 calibers are great for both deer and chucks. I've shot a truckload of chucks with my 270 and this year am using a fairly new 7mm-08 just to get the feel of it better.

Re: woodchucks
It's a matter of where and how far, really. If you're hunting long range,.22-250,.243,270,.223,all a mater of choice.Hunting in a lightly populated area? Get a rimfire...Me? I hunt big farms,[Well, used to,since Dad don't go anymore..] I like taking impossible shots with my old Savage .22 Mag single shot Manlicher with a 3X9 on it.Nothing like taking a shot, and your buddy hands you a coffee while you wait to hear wether you got him or not,LOL!!!.

Re: woodchucks
Shooting Chucks is an art form. Somewhere there has to be a group of people against shooting woodchucks. Shotguns work but prefer a nice .22 bolt with a cheap scope.

Anything from .22 and up will work. You can spend thousands on a real accurate long range outfit or less than a hundred on a cheap 22. Always wear a orange hat when hunting.
