Default What to expect at SGL Ranges..

Hi,

I'm looking at going to SGL 206 or 300 . I was wondering what to expect from these. Rules, what to bring, what's available, best time to go, etc. I'm not used to "public" ranges and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Expect to see firearms handling that will make you want to duck and cover.

Do a search for "state game lands"

Here's an oldie but goodie:: http://www.pafoa.org/forum/ranges-18...tate-park.html

http://www.pafoa.org/forum/ranges-18...nch-creek.html

http://www.pafoa.org/forum/ranges-18...e-stories.html

This is what happened the last time I was at SGL #43. I've never gone back.

Quote:
I've gone to a public range once on a weekend. It was my last as well. #43 Game Lands range

I was setup on the 4th bench from the right. It's for shooting at 100 yards. I had my rifle and gear setup. Waited for the clear and we all marched down to setup targets etc... No problems.

Everyone gets back and the range goes hot. A few minutes later someone arrives and takes the bench to my left.

The first 2 benches on the right are for 25 yards. Most people use then for pistol shooting. Plus there is an area you can stand and shoot from as well that is in a direct line with the 25 yard range.

The guy to my left pulls out a Glock and proceeds to start blasting away across 4 shooting lanes. Not only that but the sum bitch was shooting at the target uprights!

I immediately packed my gear and got the hell outta there.

Yea make sure you take a kevlar vest....I remember one time we went clear a st game land 211 and i had to tell some 60 year old guy to unchamber his round and to make sure his action is open....and he got in my face about me being a kid (21)... i was like no one here wants to get shot over dumb hillbilly ignorance.

Also there was another time some guy flipped out when there were still people down range and some guy kept messing with their gun while they were still down range, just be on ur toes

Make absolutely certain you know all the rules and obey them to the letter, literally. The GCOs have been observed citing for every fathomable reason.

See the PA Game Commission website. Here are the rules posted at SGL43:

Most likely to be fairly disappointed. Spend a few $ and join a club, you'll likely find much nicer facilities.

PA Rifleman- excellent information! Thank you!

Only bad stories huh'? I'd still like to go, just to see what it's like. I don't think I've lived in a State that provides public ranges. Pretty neat if you ask me.

I'd like to join a club but I won't be shooting that much. Wish I could but aint going to happen. Maybe when I have more time to shoot. Hehe..

Are targets provided or would I need to take my own?

I go to a SGL range on RT. 6 every weekend. I wiil admit that you see some bad habits. But, I have never felt in dangered. I have shot hundreds of rounds and made many new friends while doing so.

I have had nothing but good experiences while at this range.

Some fun can be had at the ranges if you go during a weekday preferrably in the morning.

At Range #43 there's an old fella who shoots a .95 caliber cannon. I saw it, heard it and felt it last year.
