I'm glad that I don't have to worry about active shooters and the training that goes along with them.
Guns are illegal in NJ, so no active shooters in our paradise.
At my employer, the fire alarm sounds quite often. Throughout the building it is just a strobe light. No audible alarm. Everyone carries on like normal unless they see the smoke and fire or the announcement is made to evacuate. If evacuation is needed, it's only floor by floor.
We did have an active shooter scare a year and some back. Building policy, shut and lock all entry and exit doors and stay away from windows. If you weren't in your office location, fine someone's office to share for the moment.
As we worked out of a hospital, all doors are fire rated and only have small windows if any. So decently robust incase of emergency.
The unfortunate issue with my employer is, if you set foot on property with a firearm and are foundout whether on the clock or not, you're termed. Lost a few people that way cause they stopped in for a visit and someone saw and reported it.
I now thankfully work from home full time so I carry each and every day and I don't know if they can say anything about it to me or not. But I'm not gonna ask and definitely won't tell.
I agree with much of the advice here - basically be quiet and go thru their charade. I already did my assessment months back after the last office remodel:
- on 2nd floor - only 2 stairway/exits from a common corridor - so everyone funnels thru a chokepoint.
- ALL offices and conference rooms(on outer walls) have a full window door - only "HR/financial office" doors have locks.
- ALL offices and conference rooms have full window or sheetrock walls.
- These windows give anyone on the corridor side easily a 175-degree view into the room
- middle area(my area) is all cubicles; soft panel walls 4'-5' height.
- cubicle aisles are dead-ended to outside walls - walls are solid wall half-way up/fixed window to ceiling
- corner conference rooms have full height/fixed window walls.
Let's just say I have MY exit plan in place. HIDE ain't happening! The RUN scenario involves a corner conf room, rope ladder and use of a heavy object thru the window! And FIGHT - well---no comment ;)
I will report back after the "training".
Happy to hear that you conducted your own “assessment”, because situational awareness is certainly key. Although, your opinion about the training being a “charade” is misguided. As mentioned in my prior post, suggest that you attend the training with an open mind... you might learn something valuable that could save your life.
Oh, and check your “ego” at the door.
