Aside from that, it's rather simplistic. A coward would stand on the sideline solely because of legal liability, but a reasonable person can still consider it along with many other factors. What are my legal and physical risks? What are the risks to the victims if I act? If I don't act? What's my chance of success? Are there better options like calling for help?
We make decisions in these threads based on ridiculously limited information and silly blanket statements. We have no idea what was going on in this guy's mind.

Reports are that it will be some sort of middle eastern roast with potatoes and carrots.

I sincerely hope no one ever introduces a jury to this concept of justified but not necessary.

This isn't a trial.
Put me on the jury if he shoots the guy. "Not guilty".
Ask me if it was necessary to shoot him. Sure as hell doesn't look that way.
You gotta have a pretty limited focus to come up with a reason the guy needed to be suicided.

I don't consider myself an executioner. There's more to the decision than legal justification. I think he didn't want to hurt anyone else at that point. If you're ok with shooting someone in that situation, that's up to you.

I never considered myself an executioner either. I'm just not willing to roll the dice when a guy is advancing on me with a knife, a guy that just killed someone. I don't think that makes me bloodthirsty. I think its reasonable.

I think it's more reasonable to think that the guy isn't going to cut you.
Especially when he tells you he just killed the only woman he ever loved and WANTS you to kill him now.

Yep, disdraught, hands out to his sides, chest out, saying "shoot me!", the body language is pretty clear.

I don't think it is EVER wise to assume someone advancing on you with a weapon is not going to use it. I don't care if he says he really just needs a hug. Nope.
