Anyone assembled a dedicated .22LR upper?
I've had a Frontier Armory lower for a few years. Never got around to making/getting an upper for it. I've tried it with .223 upper and it works great.
It came with a second hammer intended for .22LR uppers.
An upper receiver (smooth, no forward assist) I ordered came yesterday. I planned on ordering other parts as I find them in a money-saving offer. Problem is, it looks like individual parts when added up may equal or exceed purchasing a complete upper...in which case I've just increased the costs by buying this receiver.
One of the things that drives up assembling may be shipping on each item. Oh well.
Anyway, I have a spare charging handle, delta nut/spring, carbine hand guards and cap and now a receiver. I have Black Dog .22 magazines which I am hoping will work. I think all I need now is a BCG and barrel, which I am uncertain about. I see collars for .22 conversions. If I am reading correctly, barrels come with a proper extension and the equivalent of a collar is already on the barrel?
And, if I am going to use the carbine hand guards, I'm limited to a 16" setup, if 20 inch, I'll need rifle-length guards. In either case, I'll need a front sight or gas block for the hand guard cap to rest against?
I think I'll be buying CMMG, but looking for suggestions on other makes.
Thanks for any advice.
Re: Anyone assembled a dedicated .22LR upper?
I wanted to do a dedicated .22lr upper build to slap on my SBR lower, but I found the prices to be insane. I was looking at CMMG for the barrel and bolt. When factoring in the price of a handguard - the prices equaled a complete M&P 15/22. I put the items on my wish list but I never see any sales from CMMG
Ultimately I settled on CMMG's conversion bolt to put into a .223 rifle
Re: Anyone assembled a dedicated .22LR upper?
I also was looking at 22lr uppers but the prices changed my mind. I got a cmmg conversion kit and it works great .

Using their mags or using the adapter for S&W mags?
I'm assuming your using the AR barrel? If so did you notice much/any degradation in accuracy?
.

I also have a kel tec plr22 the magazines I use for that are interchangeable with the conversion. I bought the magazines a couple years ago from cdnn when they where only $8.99. I am not that good of a shot and I pretty much use bulk 22 ammo so I have no complaints. The kit was on sale couple of weeks ago from Davidsons defence for $139.00 shipped and it came with 1 magazine .

Re: Anyone assembled a dedicated .22LR upper?
I'm on my way with the .22LR build. It is going to add up to more than a complete S&W ready-made, and that's with my own complete lower, handguards, front cap, delta ring/nut and my own Anderson receiver. Insane it is. But what else to do with a lower and already-owned parts? Guess I'da been way ahead just selling them cheap if anyone would want them.
Some make money on guns and parts. I can't seem to even save money :p LOL
Oh well. Can't take it with me, and the kids'll just waste it.
Re: Anyone assembled a dedicated .22LR upper?
Not a build, but I bought a Chiappa 22LR upper years ago.
I think they are now found under American Tactical Imports. (ATI)
I've seen mixed reviews, but mine runs great.
Haven't priced them in years, but were quite affordable.

EDIT: I'm thinking they are no longer made.
The only place I could quickly find one in stock is here
$330

A gun shop in Berks county is advertising a new ruger sr22 rifle in stock for $349.00.

Yep, that's about what the S&W is. Saw one at the Philly armory show for I think 329. But then add tax and transfer fees and that too goes up.
