Yugo M48 Safety Issue(??)
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen, hope your Sunday is going well. Sucks the Eagles lost, but hey, still SuperBowl Champs!
Anyways, I bought myself yet another Yugo M48 over the weekend as a total impulse buy. Pretty nice gun, low serial number, #582 to be exact, matching stock, matching receiver, non matching bolt, but a very smooth action.. not sure about the floor plate or anything, but I nice solid looking and feeling gun. Has its blemishes here and there but overall, a good looking rifle. I'm no smith and I won't pretend to be one, so obviously have to get her checked out. Got myself a nice NO GO gauge coming so I might as well try this whole fix it yourself thing.
My main issue with this ole girl is my safety. Seems to be stuck.
I've heard it countless times about a stuck Mauser safety but just out here looking for opinions.

As you can see here, with the bolt in the rilfe, uncocked the wing functions normally, and wont move.

Cocked the gun and the wing now goes into its second/up position, normally.
Thats where it stops. The wing wont move any further to the right to its third/full safe position.

With the bolt out of the gun and somewhat apart...

I can now fully engage the safety..
My question is why? I'm not really trying to rip my bolt apart tonight and find out so any tidbits will help a bunch!
So as a TL;DR
Safety wont full engage when the bolt is in the rifle.
It WILL engage when the spring/pin/safety assembly is out of the bolt body..
Why??
Re: Yugo M48 Safety Issue(??)
Perusing the 'net, it appears that there is a mismatch between sear and cocking piece. It can be from worn parts, mismatched parts, or the result of someone having done a kitchen table "trigger job". It is suggested replace the sear and cocking piece with parts known to be in spec, or submit to a Mauser-oriented gunsmith.

It's not your solution, but may provide some insight.
The other possible issue can be deciphered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tGyxwYdqxc (around the 2 min mark)
It has to do with the safety in the third position not lining up with a slot in the bolt.

Great videos! Some people were a little concerned with my fascination with guns as a kid. The designs and precision was the attraction. I admired (and still do) the mind that spatially envisioned that function, and transformed it into physical reality.

Just a little tid bit here guys.
I stuck my other Yugo bolt in this rifle and the safety on that bolt wouldnt engage either.
Stuck the bolt pictured in the other rifle and the safety too, would not engage to the 3rd position.
Gonna check out those videos and see whats up.
I have NO idea about this rifle. I had an extra $175 laying around and thought why not.

Try moving the bolt up and down just a little while attempting to engage the third position. Sounds to me like the safety is not indexing the slot in the bolt (see second video). Just as an FYI, I can't think of a practical use for the third position.
Re: Yugo M48 Safety Issue(??)
Neither can I, but being my first real rifle I'd rather know it all works like it should.
Weird, cleaned the wing up real nicely and I can move it to the 3rd position but its a freaking beast.
Problem solved/avoided :D
