Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
With the rust and stuff ... I would say $400. Before the election, $250 maybe $300.
He can replace the stock and handguards if he wants, but ... if he does, he then has to make sure it's 922r compliant.
There are a few companies that make "tacticool" accessories like railed handguards and what not. I like my AKs in the more traditional style, but hay what ever he likes.
btw ... these were what china imported after the ban and hence the sporter name and the thumbhole stock. That's how they got around the "evil" features, plus it should be missing the bayonet lug too.
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
after a trip to Sunset with DCDalton and his wife, i must say if i were to buy an AK, it wouldnt be this one. atleast not this one because of the stock. the thumbhole was not comfortable at all and was just a PITA to shoot with, the scope was off like i thought, but the iron sights were pretty dead on.
ill past the info onto the coworker about keeping it compliant if he wants to go the tacticool route with it, and also my thoughts on the gun after having shot it.
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
yea, you can make them "tacticool" I've been reworking one of my AK's for home defense/Bug Out gun. still need to get a nice red dot or reflex sight for it, and a flash light. Tapco makes a ton of stuff for it. You can really lighten up the gun with the polymer.
Just tell him to remember, it's not an AR or anything like that. Your not gonna be nailing super tight groups at 100yrds, Some pieces will need a little be of modification to fit perfectly. I just experienced this last night on a simple rail mount setup.
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
Maybe try to convince your friend to sell it. I had one of these exact same guns from same importer. It was a total rust bucket and really not that accurate. Really the worst of all the AKs i've owned. As much as I took care of it . it still began to rust. my .02$
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
I would not sell that Gun, in Fact i own one, i see that your gun were imported in 94', buy a parts kit from Federal arms or Tapco to make it legal, get rid of that Thumbhole stock keep the rest, The Mak 90 is not much different from a Polytech, they are all made by Norinco, it has all machined internal parts, a chrome lined hammer forged barrell , the best trigger pull you will find on any AK, a blued finish.
The rust is caused by handling with sweaty hands and not wiping down afterwards.
If you sell it to a AK collector you will get between 7-800 dollars as long as Obama is in office.
Dont rip off yourself by selling it for no $3-400.
Also the MAK has a 1.3 mm skin as opposed to those cheap Romanians thT HAS has 1.0 etc.

Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
Consider that no more of these will be imported; that with some work you can make this a nice original configuration gun and the answer is over time the gun will go up in value. It certainly will be worth more over time than the pieces of paper you will use today to buy it.
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
For now, get some CLP and 0000 steel wool and get on that rust- then go to Ironwood designs.com and get some real wood. You'll have to take the thumbhole off and see if it's angle cut or straight. You can figure that out on ironwoods site from the pics.
As far as the scope, you can't put a scope on the receiver cover and expect it to hold any kind of zero. Every time you clean the weapon you pull that cover off and slide it back on. Also, every shot can jar the scope around, you need to get that thing off there or get another cover. You can mount scopes/red dots to the forearm with a rail that replaces the upper wood. Most popular is Ultimak.
Chinese AK's are some of the best out there- receivers, barrels, smooth triggers.
Re: Norinco Mac 90 Sporter
The Mak has a blued finish , not no painted on junk , a little steel wool will clean it up nicely, then if you wish buy a can of Brownells polymer finish and give it a nice finish, if you bake the brownells in the oven at 300 degrees for 45 minutes you get a tough as nails finish and you dont have to worry about rust again, i did it to mine and its beautiful.
With the new stock set you should get 2-3 inches at 100 yards if you can shoot, 5 inches with chinese surplus ammo.
Mine likes Wolf 123 grain Hp the best gives 2 inches at 100 yards, The best ammo for a MAK is Hansen 124 grain, Hansen is Israeli Made imported and dist by Hansen out of Connecticut, this is hot stuff.
Also bear in mind that a AK sight is not written in English, the 100 mark is actually about 150 yards because it is written in Russian Measurements, so you will hit low at 100, just set it to the "D" position which comes out to 300 yards and you will be dead on at 100 , maybe 2 inches high which is what you want in a defensive gun.
I paid $275 for mine in 94 , so you see where the investment has gone .

Sorry can't imagine anyone paying 7-800 for that. NIB are going for around 7-800, but for a used one that has rust ... just don't see it happening.
He might be able to get $500 or so for it.
If it were me, I would clean it up and de-ban that thing. As someone else said, these are not getting imported again. No more goodies from china.
