My father had a handgun when I was a kid. Never knew where he kept it, nor did I look for it.
Did find his nudie mags though.

I'd show mine, but that would defeat the purpose...
Concealment is great but you also have to look at the environment. Exterior walls using a recess will surely show temperature swings and condensation within between the seasons.
I know a guy who build a hidden recess in a closet to hide his guns. Trouble was, it was in the hollow space between his bedroom and the bathroom shower enclosure.
He had pitting and mildew on the guns and slings in the short time he had them in there.
I agree with a simple pistol safe concept. Bolt it into the back of a night stand or your headboard and keep it locked but accessible.
My first "gun safe" was a concealed portion in my basement of my old house. The basement was partially finished when I bought it. The unfinished part was just the studs and the backs of the drywall. It was uneven and not square like a regular room. I noticed one place was about 8 feet long and 4 feet recessed. The "end" was behind the water heater.
I put up a few studs to close off the unfinished wall to square and finished it with pegboard (perfect for my workshop). Covered the back of the new studs (in my secret room) with lauan (so you could not look thru the holes). That left a small 3-4 foot wide entrance behind the water heater. I covered it with a piece of paneling on hinges. No lock just a cabinet "spring lock" to hold it the paneling in place when closed.
When it was done going into the unfinished part of the basement looked like regular square rooms finished in pegboard. But there was a secret paneling door behind the water heater. Open it up and there was a 4x8 foot hidden room. Plenty of room for firearms or even a bug out room if you needed to hide (with a firearm).
Never told anyone about it. Eventually sold the house but after closing I left it open so the new owners could find it.
I know. That's why I'm hesitant to show mine.
I like those concealment shelves but there's nowhere that one would look right in my place and be easily reachable.
Handgun hiding is absurdly easy - tons of easily accessible hiding places for small stuff.
Rifles are a bit more tricky but it can be done.
Concealment doesn't even need to be complex. You could mount a rifle to the wall next to a window if the curtains extend out past the edge of the window enough.
Hell, a "fake window" could be created by hanging curtains/window shade and having the item hidden behind it.
Large paintings and raised. "3-D" wall art can work as well. I was going to go that route, but where I was going to place it the side was too visible, revealing the true "depth"/how far it stuck out from the wall. If placed where it will only be viewed head on, the depth won't be noticed as much and unlikely to be seen as a possible hiding spot.
Those wraparound canvas paintings are pretty popular and blend in nicely.
Most are deep enough to hide a handgun with ease.

I built one but now I can't find it because I concealed it so well.
There's this guy that is highly skilled at building things like that: http://www.dontevenreply.com/view.php?post=84
This does not have to be complicated. Do you have a picture or poster in your living room or bedroom? If you do not have a wife..........Take it down and cut off a small square of drywall behind it. Put in a wood shelf on the bottom and place your handgun in the hole. Then put the picture back up.
If it is concealed well it does not have to be secured. If you have kids make the cut out high or if they are old enough tell them not to touch it.
When has anyone looked behind your pictures anyway? Redecorating or selling your house it might be an issue but it will work while you are living there.
