Here is one tale, about a Century-branded, subcontract-built AK;

Not all Century-branded AKs are as finicky, their Yugo M70's and Polish 7.62x39 guns have good reviews. Maybe more concientious subs built these??
From the tales on the 'net, the USA-made AKs to avoid are the "IO" built guns, but this is only from second-hand stories.
On the higher end, these look outstanding;

These are Iraqi knock-offs of their Yugos. Like the Century guns, enough USA parts in the builds to be 922 legit.

Unless your talking about builders building up kits .. stay away. IO are junk. Non-Yugo (and some Polish) Century stuff are junk.

I have a new Century Zastava N-PAP. Paid $550 out the door at a Gun Show. The Fit and finish was very good (No canted sights, No Mag wobble, all rivets good, etc) and I like it very much. It eats any ammo I feed it and functions very well.
The only issue that I have encountered with it was a problem with the trigger not resetting. The double wound "Shepherds Hook" Trigger spring was slipping and blocking the trigger, so watch out for that. I was able to fix it in 5 minutes with a pair of needle nose pliers. I just gave the spring some twists and bends to keep it in place and now it functions flawlessly.
All in all, it's a great deal... I would suggest going to a show or a store so you can inspect and hand pick the rifle that you are buying to make sure there are no visible issues.
Good luck all...

Only the pistol grips and upper and lower HGs interchange.
The buttstock tangs are completely different betw. stamped and milled applications.
