My dad lives in NJ and is moving with guns
Okay, I have a few questions how to handle this. My dad lives in NJ and is moving in 3 weeks, but sadly he's staying in NJ. However, he wants to store the guns at my home in pa for 3 to 6 months and I know that simply can't be done.
I have read if he keeps them in a safe that only he holds the keys it can be or is that false?
What's the best way to handle this for now, as he's 77 years old and eventually wants to will them to me.

He's 77, is he going to shoot them anymore? Tell him that you looked into it and the only way you can hold them is if he gives them to you. It will save any inheritance hassles.

However, it's across state lines and some handguns. I would have to go through an FFL in pa only or NJ as well?

You may want to run this by Phil for some input to avoid potential problems.
He would know the easiest way to do it.

Handguns will have to go through an FFL in recipient's home state (PA). If you're going to transfer a bunch, might as well do them all at once. You may get a slight break on the typical 'per gun' transfer fees.

If he is moving, and staying in NJ (to live I suspect), why doesn't he just move the guns to his new home?

ETA - If you're certain he has clearly documented that the guns will pass to you when he dies, I'd avoid doing FFL transfers if you can it all (legally). It's not often you have the opportunity to acquire firearms legally with no paper trail, which you would be able to do when he passes.

Not to be morbid, but it would a lot less hassle if they were inherited rather than if transferred to another person across state lines while both are still alive.

That is interesting and good to know. I would expect an inheritance tax to come into play but I am not an accountant.

If the Father gives him the guns that should be the end of it. Why would it matter what state either of them live in? Why would anyone need to know about what a father gives to his son? It's no one else's business.
