In my area there are several, I'm not at all impressed by adult entertainment centers like Bass.
What I mean by appealing is gun shops that look impressive and that have lots of really neat displays, another words, appealing to the eye and appealing to people who first step into the store and see it at first glance.
As for having a knowledgable staff, I would be wary of advice given at a gun shop because they're out to make money and they want to sell you the guns that would bring them the most profit. That is why I don't go by what a salesperson at a gun shop tells me on what brand to buy or if this brand is better than that brand, they just want me to buy the guns that make them the most profit.

When I bought a gun at the Bass Pro in Nashville I filled out the form on the computer, paid $10 for a background check, and then was told to come back in about 20 minutes and that by then the background check should be done. So I looked around a bit and then came back in about that amount of time, the background check was finished so I gave them my credit card, completed my purchase, and got my gun and that was that.

The produce section was built over a stream, and you could see the water through cracks in the plank floor. They had other cinder block buildings too, like a redneck mall - sporting goods, hardware, a restaurant and bakery. The bathrooms would look at home in a dive bar. Shopping there was an adventure. They spent NOTHING on overhead, but people would come from out of state and leave with multiple carts heaped with groceries. I would shop at a gun store like that.
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to scruff again.
Sigh. I'm seeing a pattern here.
Long way of saying "me too".

My favorite bar ever was on a dim side street in Manhattan on the east side.
It was dingy, grubby, shabby, shady and dirty.
Beers were a couple bucks. Mixed drinks around $3-4, and not watery.
They had an AWESOME juke box.
The name of the bar was...
"Dive Bar"
Re: More appealing gun shops are more expensive
The OP reminded me about my misspent youth. Ray's was a large shop on Route-22 where I was a fill-in range safety officer for a few years. Even with the "employee discount" I found that I could purchase elsewhere at a better price......and Meltzers (in Lodi) was a trip. The owner was a true character. He was constantly talking, laughing and telling jokes.....but you could rarely beat his prices. His favorite saying was "Meltzer, Meltzer, he's your friend. He'll get your money in the end" And he usually did.

Locks in Philly has genuine character. Cabellas is fake. Noah gave the answer if indeed there was a question.

I don't mind browsing around Bass Pro if I am in Harrisburg for a few days. I even have run out to Hamburg to waste time in Cabela's. I don't think that I would ever be inclined to purchase a firearm from either place. I like a smaller shop atmosphere and one on one attention. I was in a larger "box" type outdoor store looking for a particular gun just to handle one. All three clerks behind the counter never even heard of what I was asking for. Sighhhhhhhhhh
