Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
My "contribution" to this thread is that I have a Savage model 25 bolt. But it's in .17 Hornet. Not that it matters, but I'm just not a fan of the .17 rimfire. I owned one once. Sold it. But this little Hornet is pretty accurate. I only reload and the first target is shooting a 20gr. Nosler Varmint at 100 yards using 9.8gr Lil' Gun. The second is the same 100 yards, same 20gr Nosler, but I use a charge of 10.1gr of Lil' Gun. The max load for Lil'l Gun is 10.1.

Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
I shot 30 shots just now at about 50 yards or maybe just less than. 2 types of ammo. Hornady 17 gr vmax and Winchester 20 gr super x. I got a new 5 round mag which solved the feeding and all rounds ejecting issue. My best 5 shot group is about 1.25" outside hole to outside hole. My worst 5 shot group is about 1.5" outside to outside. The hornady seems to shoot the better of the 2. At this range shooting my marlin 25n in 22lr all holes would be touching. I'm going to hunt squirrels this weekend with it. I may try a different scope in the near future
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
Mine is a heavy barrel with the laminate thumbhole stock. Bought it used with no idea of round count. First five shots at 50yds could be covered with a dime. Probably the most accurate rifle for 100yds and under that i own. Great trigger. I wouldn't give up on it yet.
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
I have only used the hornaday 17 grain vmax
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
My savage is accurate enough to sneak up on whistle pigs and take them out. Try some 20 grainers, that’s what my likes best.
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
I had a Marlin that only liked the cci tnt hollow points. Anything else and the groups opened up significantly
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
Another 93r17 owner here. Mine shoots 1 groups at 100y. Only with CCI or Federal 17gr TNTs. The Vmax isnt much worse but the Winchester stuff if junk.
Is that Tasco adjustable objective? If not you can easily lose 1/2 at 50y with that.

To you couple of guys shooting Woodchucks (Groundhogs) with a rimfire, take note that it is not legal in PA to use rimfire rifles for such hunting.

How about pest control?
Re: Disappointed in Savage 17hmr
LoL, per 141.22 it is legal to hunt groundhogs with an .177 airgun but not a rimfire. Pretty goofy.
As for pest control by the property owner, in the case where property damage is occurring (excluding agricultural crops):
141.3:
(a) (3) Wildlife taken to protect personal property shall be taken in a humane and lawful manner.
Which implies the effectiveness is what matters outside of hunting situations.
