Re: Negative encounter at the Shop Rite
"Are you a cop?"
"No."
"Then why are you carrying a gun?"
"Because the Holy Qur'an commands me to infidel!!!"
Re: Negative encounter at the Shop Rite
What is "to infidel!!!" and how can I be sure I'm doing it right.
Think you forgot a comma in there. :D

Woman: "Are you a police officer"?
Me: No, I'm not.
Woman: "Then why are you carrying a gun"? (slightly elevated tone)
Me: "To protect my family and me"
Woman: (raised voice) "FROM WHO!!!"
Me: Hopefully, no one.
At this point, my wife leaned over to her and said something. The woman's face went ashen and she said: "I am".
I asked my wife what she said, and she told the woman: "Leave us alone now".
I was half expecting a local PD to be called, but nothing else happened.
If I was in such a situation the dialogue might've gone something like this.
Woman: "Are you a police officer"?
Me: No, I'm not.
Woman: "Then why are you carrying a gun"? (slightly elevated tone)
Me: Because I can.

I, too, never wear anything that would identify my place of work when OCing.
So what do you teach?
Do you have a CC permit? If you do you could carry at work, just don't let anybody find out.

While it may not be illegal under the UFA (Uniform Firearms Act) to carry in one's place of employ, it is absolutely legal for the employer to have prohibition policies for their facility. In other words - the cops won't necessarily be taking you to the grey-bar hotel, but you can most definitely be fired with no recourse. With this in mind, many people weigh their need for employment against their need for self-preservation.
I, personally, will not judge anyone either way...

I teach philosophy, I do research in Bioethics.
Carrying at work isn’t worth that risk

My prior employer had a 'don't ask don't tell' policy regarding carry. But if you were overt about it, concealed poorly, or 'printed' to the point a customer said something, it was "now you gotta stop or you're outta here".
In my current line of work, for myself, I have to be discreet too. I can't have customers getting uncomfortable if they see I'm carrying. So I have to be equally discreet even though I'm now 'the boss'...

You got a point there, but if you're legally able to carry and your employer has this rule about no guns at work and you're going to carry anyway than you should just follow the other rule, don't get caught.
