PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A woman was fatally shot by a police officer in front of more than two dozen people during a live gun demonstration Tuesday in Florida, the Punta Gorda Police Department said, CBS affiliate WINK reported.
During a "Citizen Police Academy" session on Tuesday night, two participants were randomly selected from the group of 35 community members in attendance to be put through a "shoot/don't shoot" scenario.
Students were asked to make decisions on using simulated lethal force in a live role play. During the first scenario, participant Mary Knowlton was struck with a live round and was fatally injured, PGPD said in a press release.
She was transported to Lee Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
A press release from the department did not identify the officer involved, but said the person was placed on administrative leave, WINK reported.
"I am devastated for everyone involved in this unimaginable event," said Chief Tom Lewis in a statement. "If you pray, please pray for Mary's family, and for the officers who were involved. Everyone involved in this accident is in a state of overwhelming shock and grief."

I predict no charges. It was a cop, after all.

Would not be too sure of that statement ! Personal knowledge of this Department leads me to believe Negligent/Accidental Discharge of the Officers weapon ! Punta Gorda P.D is an exemplary run and by the bookno matter what charges are being brought by Dept a full and thourough investigation and with total transparency will be made to the public !Sad for the Lady, sad for the Officer and sad for Punta Gorda P.D. I can't understand how this is even possible unless the trainers are utter morons or the cop purposefully put a round in his gun. I sincerely doubt it's the latter so that only leaves gross negligence.

I've just created an alert for this story, because in 6 to 8 weeks after the investigation is completed and the cop was found to be within the duties as a police officer and this was nothing but a horrible accident, I can come back and post the results. After all, it isn't like there's a trend of cops shooting people accidentally and no charges being filed.
One of the most recent: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...T-charged.html
No charges, filed, the cop accidentally fired twice.

How many times have we read that a criminal "made a mistake"? So and so did a burglary years ago and since that mistake..... The man who knocked the woman to the ground and ran off with her handbag apologized to her for his mistake...
Well, dammit, cops can make mistakes too.

How is it possible to not check your gun? Or to use one in the first place instead of a blue trainer?
No excuse.

How do you know the officer was part of the demonstration? Could have been a WWG call.

Nope. Cops are better than us. Better trained. Smarter. Stronger. Faster. They need to be held to a higher standard.
