semi- to full-auto conversion
I'm in the process of "manufacturing" an AR-15 piston SBR. Once it's all approved and whatnot, could I convert it to full-auto (or 3 round burst) if I wanted to?
I don't know what goes into doing that hardware-wise, so if you do, feel free to share. Mostly though I want to know the legal implications of doing so. Would I have to re-register it with the BATF or what?

No new machineguns can be produced by private citizens since may 1986....
Re: semi- to full-auto conversion
True story. Thats why a "transferrable" full-auto is $10k++. An extra sear is not $9k. Its the rarity.

So do I. OK that makes sense. I was wondering why the machine guns for sale on here were all like $14K. Thanks for the explanation.
Re: semi- to full-auto conversion
IIRC, your only option is a DIAS, or Drop In Auto Sear, which is registered as a machine gun.
Check out the FAQ in this section, and read up before you do anything. No one wants to land in the federal pokey because of a lack of research.

Could you explain the "drop-in auto sear"?Whats the difference between the old "machine guns" with their sears, and throwing in a DIAS now? Isn't it the same thing?

Before the '86 ban there were companies making drop in sears to convert semi's to auto. The sear is what makes the gun auto. Before the ban went into place you could register the sear as the MG NFA part. Those registered sears can be transferred and dropped into a Title I gun.
..or something like that.

You are correct. The auto sear itself is the NFA part. It can then be 'dropped into' any gun. The gun is not an NFA item once the NFA sear has been dropped in, the sear itself remains the NFA part.
For instance the lightning link: http://www.quarterbore.com/nfa/lightninglink.html
the actual item it a registered NFA item that can then be dropped into an AR.
What's nice about them, if you can afford them, is you can use them in more than one rifle without having to get each rifle 'registered' as an NFA item
