If it slides, use grease. If it rotates, use oil.
Just my opinion.... I'm not a lawyer.
And most put way too much grease on a gun. Use a Q-Tip to apply the grease. If the part is shiny and you can see the color of the part through the film of grease – good. If you can see the color of the grease, you put too much on.
I guess it can be said there are no dumb questions. Of course use grease on the rails. I use TW25B Make sure to get some under your fingernails too.
G96 is my Cologne of choice since forever, but would not brought this subject up if another seasoned shooter said with all the round count being high it would be good to start useing grease.TY for all suggestions !
Either one will work . Your lubricating a tool or machine just like any other with metal on metal contact . I use grease on sliding metal parts . I Use plain ole wolfs head bearing grease, As others have said a little dab will do ya .
Ballistol.
I use a very light coat of grease on rails, whether it be Glocks or 1911s. I rub a small dab on a pipe cleaner, then run it back & forth in the rails. You can get a huge pack of pipe cleaners in the craft section of Walmart for about a dollar.
I typically don't lube my guns at all that often. I've been shooting the same Gen II G17 since 1986. I think I've cleaned and lubed it maybe 5 times (with oil) in 30 years. :p
I'm pretty sure I won't wear it out in my lifetime.
