Cool. People will be along with suggestions. I don't really have any because I just moved here from Virginia and haven't looked into Pennsylvania training much yet. I will say this though: it sounds like no matter which instructor/program you go with, you may want to take the "first-level defensive handgun" or equivalent course.

And just an FYI: there are a lot of course types out there other than handgun and "hunting courses." :p
Re: Training Suggestions?
Check out the training section of the forum. There are always things popping up there and generally a good description of the courses offered. If you're not sure if a course is right for you I would contact the person running it and ask if it's what you're looking for. HTH. (BTW, what gun did you buy? :D )

Look at the training schedule at Pitcarin-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club (PMSC) http://www.pmsconline.com or contact the Fire Institute http://www.fireinstitute.org. Also plan on attending the next PAFOA Group Shoot at Pitcarin-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club (PMSC) August 9th, 2009.

Welcome and congrats on your first gun.
For training, check out the F.I.R.E. Institute. They are a not-for-profit training company. They have OUTSTANDING training classes. http://www.fireinstitute.org/
Re: Training Suggestions?
I'm not really knowledgeable to make suggestions...but here is what i am doing:
I've owned a gun for years...LTCF for years...but never had any formal training. I am scheduled for PA Hunter Safety the weekend of Aug 7th....and am currently looking into the NRA Basic course. There is an NRA Pistol FIRST STEP course...but to me that seems to be covered in the Basic...(can anybody confirm or deny that?)
These seem to be the beginning training.....

Re: Training Suggestions?
Thanks for the info on FIRE Institute. This is exactly what I was looking for!
Shawn & Ed - Between this thread and my other thread asking about area clubs, you sold me on PMSC. Filling out the app tonight. See you there!
SFN - My first was the Beretta 92FS. I love it!! I'll go up an rent some different ones at Anthony Arms, but haven't come across any that I like better yet. That being said, I just bought a Glock 19 on Sunday, and I believe my Minotaur MTAC holster just got shipped out today! Can't wait to get it!
