Minor addition to Forum Rules
All,
Just a brief note that the following text was added to the Forum Rules:
Quote:
In addition, these rules and related infractions are in effect everywhere on the site. This includes, but is not limited to: posts, user profiles, reputation comments, etc.
In short, the rules apply everywhere. This is nothing new, I just wanted it explicitly stated.
Re: Minor addition to Forum Rules
Does this apply to PM's as well?

I'll wait for an Admin to relay the official word on this, but I can assure you if things like threats of violence, etc., are occurring in PMs, the "private" part will not protect the offending party.

There is no easy way for anyone to read private messages (you literally need to query the database directly which only I have access to) but in cases like Greg mentioned where we get reports of people threatening others through PM I have done that and it has resulted in bans in the past.
Our rules really aren't that restrictive and I can't imagine why anyone would feel the need to violate any of them in PM any more than they would publicly on the forum.

I've been threatened in the past through PM. Physical violence and bigoted statements were thrown my way. At the time I had such poor faith in the moderators, it was during the "quit acting like a child, I'm sick of this bullshit" phase they were all abiding by, that I simply deleted the posts. Eventually I came around, unfortunately without sufficient evidence nothing was done. Even though the post I did keep had extremely hateful racist speech in it, it was not enough they said.
I hope this is going to change.

As Dan said, he's the only one who can see PMs, and it's not trivial even for him. So, the only way for us to be able to help with any egregious violations (threats, illegal goings on, etc.) is for those concerned to inform us.
If we don't know about it, we can't do anything about it.
Just because some might have been told to "suck it up" in the past doesn't mean incidents in the future will be dealt with in the same way. Even in cases where some may think the staff doesn't care, we always review complaints when we're made aware of them, and discuss how to handle them when necessary.
Re: Minor addition to Forum Rules
this is simple to solve:
add the little REPORT POST icon to the PM system.
another site I frequent has it.
someone gets a threatening or whatever PM, hit report post, fill out the reason why, and send it on.
