Remember when many homes on TV shows had a rifle rack or gun cabinet in the living room?
No one in a government office can tell me how to store my guns. If I want to leave loaded firearms strewn all over my house that's my prerogative. Pretty soon it's going to be a shootin' war.

I am unaware of ANY "safe storage" law enacted anywhere that would allow for something as basic as a single loaded handgun at the ready on or in an unlocked bedside stand. Guns need not be "stored" when in my home. I have them to defend myself. They are "safe" in that they will not act on their own, so being outside of a locked steel box, loaded and ready is a danger to no one - except the person that enters with intent to harm me.
Since I have a young child in my household my gun is either on my hip or in a safe. But I don't leave any of my firearms out unless it's on me. I get that you don't like someone telling you how to live your life. I'm fine with how you don't want to store you guns in your house, but I do this since I have young ones.

And I'm happy to let you decide what measures work for you and your personal circumstances. It's none of the government's business.
There are (at least) thousands of households in our country, with kids who have not yet reached double-digit age, where loaded firearms are readily accessible, and could actually be safely used by those very "kids" if a threat were to arise. "Children in the home" is MUCH to broad of a brush to use, even for acceptance of "safe storage" regulations. I have adult relatives, older than myself, that I would trust far less than I trusted my own son when he was 8.
