In a thread in the rifle section I asked for advice about pellet rifles for some incognito use. Member nitechampion gave the advice to use quiet .22 ammo. Thought this was a good idea so procured three offerings from CCI locally.
Rifle was a 1930's Winchester model 60a target model with a 27" barrel, rear lyman peep and lyman front globe site.
Shot handheld off bench, 10 shot groups, 25 yds, with Pact1 chrono placed 10' from muzzle. Limitation was my mid 60's eyes with bifocals.
CCI CB short. Factory specs 29 grs. 710 fps, 32 ft-lbs energy.
My average was 652.1 fps. with a spread of 57 fps. Mr. Ackley's formula computes to 27.3 ft-lbs energy.
Report very soft with a couple noticeably quieter, probably the one's on the slow end of the spread. Case is short rifle.
CCI CB long. Factory specs 29 grs. 710 fps, 32 ft-lbs energy.
My average 658.1 fps, spread 99.5 fps, 27.8 ft-lbs energy.
Case is long rifle. Report seemed even.
CCI quiet. factory spec 40 grs. 710 fps, 45 ft-lbs energy.
My average 606.9 fps. spread 253 fps, 32.7 ft-lbs energy.
Case is long rifle. Upon examining chrono results I found one shot in this group 150 fps. slower that I believe was an error throwing off report.
Edit: All were quiet enough for my use. Was surprised the 40 gr. offering was as quiet as the 29 gr. All seemed about equal.
Next step will be usage in real world to check performance. Vermin here I come.
