I just bought a used S&W 686 stainless steel 4" bbl , serial # AJSXXXX and was wondering if anyone with access to The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson would be able to help me out with the date of manufacture. I've been told the previous owner was an elderly gentleman that, for medical reasons, had to move into a healthcare facility and couldn't take the gun with him. Any help on this, or a point in the right direction would be much appreciated.
Mr. S&W 686: Fine revolver, enjoy. As to finding DOM-Date of Manufacture- have you tried just calling Smith and Wesson directly ?? or trying an e-mail post for them to reply when they find info ?? I've found them very helpful in the past. Other possible option is Editor Roy Huntingdon of American Handgunner magazine. If he and his staff don't have answer, they will know who does and will direct you there. Good luck, seamus out.

The best I can find in my books is that it dates somewhere between 1985 and 1986
