Re: Much going on in Erie
Just after crossing into PA, on Rt20, is the little town of North East. Just after passing through, on the left is Valley Gun Sales. Just after car wash. Real friendly nice little shop. Gorenflo's is a small shop also, Never know what you might find there. Presque Isle is a bit larger.

The part of route 20 that starts in Boston and up until it hits PA, is not a good part to travel with guns as it goes through some not so gun friendly regions. However, when I do get to PA I've got to get myself a souvenir for my trip so I was looking up good gun shops in the Erie region. Some of the responses have been very helpful. I also did my own google search and found Presque Isle Gun Shop, Gorenflo Co, and Armando's Gun Shop.

Sounds like an interesting venture...
Re: Much going on in Erie
It does sound like a great trip, I'd like to hear how it goes.

Plenty to do if youve got kids. I love that Waldameer is still an open park. You can park for free, walk around, go on a ride or two with the kids, and grab a snack without dropping 200 - 300 bucks on ride-all-day passes.
The 1-1/2 hour boat ride from the Perry Monument out into the lake is nice too, if you don't have your own boat.
The kids always like stopping by the kite beach, especially if we bring our own.
And the 4th of July parade rocks.

Travel a few more miles north and hit Bob's Gun Shop. Travel a few more miles north and turn east on Hershey Road. Cross Rt. 19 and hit the Erie Sport Store. That should keep you busy on the gun shop tour. Bob's has an indoor range. If you enjoy fishing you are in luck. Lot's of good places to fish including Presque Isle State Park. Not into fishing? Rent a bike at the park for a ride on the 13 mile paved multi purpose trail. Warmer weather, rent a kayak and hit the lagoons on the park. Jump on the Lady Kate (depends on when you come) and take the sunset tour off the park, through the bay and out onto the lake. Take a perch fishing trip, $30 bucks or so, on the Edward John perch boat. Catch an Erie Seawolves game. They are a minor league affiliate of the Tigers. Have kids? Spend the day at Waldameer Park. An old time amusement park and water park. Too cold? Take the kids to Splash Lagoon, an INDOOR water park. Into theater? Try the Erie Playhouse or the Warner theater from everything from local shows to Broadway Productions. Shop at the Millcreek Mall. (maybe the better half would like this) Into beer? Hit the Brewerie Brew Pub. It's in an old train station. Good beer. Like barbecue? The Federal Hill Smokehouse is a must. Small, and they are only open until the run out of meat, but the brisket and pulled pork are heavenly. This should keep you busy. When are you coming?
Edinboro Outdoors is now owned by Presque Isle Guns, from the city. I don't recommend either. Bob's is OK, but not outstanding. The rest of the recommendations are on the mark. Depending on time of year, Elk Creek is a great spot for steelhead and bass fishing. Also, in the summer, you can't beat Presque Isle beaches, if summer if arrives. The lighthouse is open for tours in the summer too. 5$, I think. And stop at Sara's for ice cream or hamburgs on your way in or out. It's right at the entrance. Also, they run a campground there. Also, near the public dock, foot of State St. there are two headboats for perch fishing, two trips a day, or you can charter a boat for walleye.

I sure do miss Jimmy and Ken at Edinboro Outdoors. They are no longer my "go to" local shop as they once were. I figure if the guy is looking to browse, that is a good place to stop with three shops all within 15 minutes of one another.

Yep, Valley is a decent shop. Before you get there, you'll go through Harborcreek, Check out U Pik Six, restaurant with outdoor seating, and you can pick out a six pack of different craft beers.
There are a few nice little restaurants in North East also. And several wineries.

Yep. I had to drive a long ways up there, but it was the only shop not gouging during the crunch, unlike most other shops.

Gorenflo's is a hole in the wall family business right in the city. It's not even open much anymore. Armando's, might be a guy out of his house? Look up Keystone Armory, and Valley Gun Works. The only two I would do bidness with.
