I dealt with them before, they'd do anything to keep your guns.
Could simply be tracking a stolen firearm. I had BATF agents waiting at the shop door on morning as I arrived to open up. Seems we unknowingly purchased some (5-6?) handguns from a guy that stole them. We had since sold 2. The agents wanted to know who bought them , they also took the others still in stock.
PASP showed up sometime later wanting to see our file copies of the Application for and Record of Sale. I rather sardonically ribbed them about BATF being there 2 weeks ahead of them.
If things happened exactly as you have described. You lawfully purchased a firearm from an FFL (and are not prohibited) and lawfully traded it in to another FFL....then NO you don't need a lawyer right now.
But why do I have a feeling there are more details to this story?
Op was the gun a pistol or rifle? This would be a big part of the story, IMO.
I have had the FBI show up at my house. We had a nice chat and they left. No guns were involved, except the fact that we were all carrying ;)
