I think right now, the Rugers are probably one of the best ARs for the price.
I have a Sig and a PSA.

Re: Kel-Tec SU16 or AR15 for first firearm (on a budget)
Since the AR556 & the S&W M&P15 are so comparable as entry level off the shelf guns I thought that I would mention for anyone considering them the only difference that I can see between the 2, namely the barrels
AR 556:Cold hammer-forged 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel with ultra-precise rifling provides exceptional accuracy, longevity and easy cleaning. The 1:8" twist rate stabilizes bullets from 35 to 77 grains, and the 5.56 NATO chamber allows the use of both 5.56 NATO and .223 Rem. Ammunition.
M&P15: 4140 barrel with a 1-9 twist 5.56 chamber

*sorry for the image size differences- I swiped them from the Manufacturer's websites
Re: Kel-Tec SU16 or AR15 for first firearm (on a budget)
For $800 as a budget I'd go with an AR with a carbine length barrel. If weight is a concern, do as Emptymag suggested and go with pencil barrel. AND, use the plastic handguards. Those aluminum railed handguards can add some very noticable weight over stock style plastic guards. If you need an accessory rail, you can find add-ons for the stock style guards. Seriously, think long and hard on the handguard.. Do you really need a quad rail, or even an aluminum free-floating handguard????

There is also that janky ass front sight block on the ruger.
Also, from an anecdotal standpoint, I had no trouble dusting a coke can at 100 yards, standing unsupported using iron sights, with the sport 2. I hit it twice in two shots, before it jumped behind some cover.

The smith also is armornites. Melonite coating. Instead of chromed is my understanding. But yea... 1:9 for heavier rounds not milsurp? Can always buy another upper eventually, longer appropriatw twist for accuracy.

Their website isn't very clear. S&W leaves a lot to be desired with their specs
I cut this from the spec list: • ArmorniteŽ Barrel Finish
I assume that is strictly the exterior of the barrel and not the bore lining?

Not sure. A lot like pgc sgl range shotguns restrictions. Although hopefully s&w can provide an exact answer unlike pgc
