Importing Grandfathers Pistol
My grandfather passed a few years ago. He never took me shooting but he would always put the gun on my belt (after removing the rounds) when we visited him. I think I was like 6 or something when he started doing that. My father credits him for my love of firearms.
Anyway I would love to bring the gun over to the states but have no clue how to go about doing it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance

This might be a place you can get some answers:
http://dr1.com/forums/showthread.php...-Firearms-laws
Also maybe contact the DR embassy and an established FFL here for some guidance.
Re: Importing Grandfathers Pistol
Yes it can be done. There are ATF topics on it you can search for with google.
There are also some companies that will do it and you can expect to pay a couple hundred dollars in fees, engraving, paperwork, shipping and taxes, perhaps more. Most people that use these companies are buying expensive European revolvers and pistols that are harder to find here or are not sold here so the costs to them are worth it.
If it's a firearm older than 1899 I believe there are less restrictions.

Engraving? Taxes?
When I brought my gun in, I did some ATF paperwork, some state department paperwork, and the shipper did some paperwork on his end. Since it is for personal use, no import stamps on the gun are required. However, if being shipped, it must go to an FFL. IF you are going there to get it, you can throw it into your luggage and carry it through customs with the paperwork without needing an FFL.
I need to say that if it is a milsurp gun, everything changes and a licensed importer has to be involved.
I think that the process took about six weeks for all of the paperwork and the ATF was very helpful (yes, they can be helpful).
Re: Importing Grandfathers Pistol
Google Cherrys Inc, I believe they still offer an importing service.
They take care of everything.
Is the Dominican Republic a US territory?
If so no importing is needed, just need to find an ffl there?
