Places to shoot in Pittsburgh
Hey guys,
I'm new to th e site and forum, although ive heard a bunch of good things about the PAFOA over the years.
I have a couple of quick questions for the group that live near Pittsburgh, but first, a little background! I'm from Indiana, have my LTCH, work part time in a gun shop when I'm at home. I'm currently working in Cranberry Townshiip as a contract engineer for Westinghouse. Now that the weather is getting nicer, I really want to get out and shoot.
Can anyone recommend a range (indoor or outdoor) in the area th t doesn't require memberships? Or if m embers hips are required, ones that are decently priced?
Also, can anyone point me in the direction of a local gun shop that has decent staff, and a decent selection of ammo?
Thanks for your help in advance!

Welcome to PAFOA.
The first range that came to my mind was the rifle & pistol ranges that are available for use at State Game Lands 203 in Wexford. It's about 6 miles south from Cranberry (79 South).
The ranges are managed by the PA Game Commission (PGC). You would need to buy a $30 range permit or have a valid PA hunting license to shoot there. So if you're going to be in Cranberry for a while the $30 fee would cover you for a year.
Here are the ranges on a Google Map:

Here is the PGC website regarding the various state ranges:

NOTE: On the Google Map: pan left (go west) from the map marker on State Gamelands Road and you will then see both ranges.

Only downside of the SGL range permit is it runs on a fiscal year secheule from July 1 to June 30th and it's not prorated. If you will be around for a while and can wait until July that would be the best deal.

Excellent point QuackXP.
I was thinking calendar when I should have been thinking fiscal. Range permits run just like the hunting licenses.
Good catch.
Re: Places to shoot in Pittsburgh
Also on June 22nd is the PAFOA/PMSC group shoot. Cost is $5.

There will be two more group shoots this year.
PMSC is a great club and I am a member. Although it's only $60 for yearly dues. The is $110 in additional upfront costs in the form of a $100 initiation fee and $10 for the gate card. It's well worth it if you live here full time not so much if your only here for a short time.

Thanks for the info so far...
Any suggestions on a place to acquire ammo? I'm looking primarily for 9mm and .22LR at reasonable prices.
Does anyone know of any type of training school near Pittsburgh?
Is anybody interested in spending an afternoon on the range one weekend? I find myself with a lot of time on the weekends....

PMSC has training classes offered by the FIRE Institute. send a message to user PeteG here on the forum for more information about it.
Finding ammo, good luck!
If you happen to find yourself over by Robinson Township, I wouldn't mind taking you over as a guest to McDonald Sportsman club.
