NWPA Sherriff's comment on storage for Act 79
Interesting Sunday morning story concerning storage of firearms relating to ACT 79.
Didn't know they are responsible for their condition.
"With Pennsylvania’s Act 79, a new law requiring anyone under a Protection From Abuse (PFA) order to relinquish their firearms, taking effect in April, the sheriff’s departments in our region are looking at how the new law will be enforced."
“The right guy in Clarion County could practically fill that room, and I know that,” Munsee told exploreClarion.com.
Gotwald said, “I know someone personally who has 800 guns. What would I do with them? And, I can’t give them to anyone else, because under the new law, I can’t release them to a third party.”
"Under Act 79, the sheriff’s departments are not simply responsible for storing the firearms seized, they are responsible for safeguarding the condition of the guns, as well."

Re: NWPA Sherriff's comment on storage for Act 79
The question I've had about all of this is why they took away being able to surrender to a third party.
How frequently does someone under a PFA today give their guns to a friend, then have the friend give the gun back before the PFA has expired, and then go on to commit a crime with it also before the PFA has expired.
Is this actually something that's going to help anything, or just another way to stick it to gun owners?

It happens frequently enough.

In today's highly communicative world, it only takes once.

Most lawmakers = relevance paradox.
Also, how is not being able to surrender, something with a possible high dollar value, to a family member not a takings? Where's the "just compensation"?

No shit, Sherlock.
Re: NWPA Sherriff's comment on storage for Act 79
Sounds like the counties have to pony up the money for storage and the manpower to inventory and maintain the holdings. Sheriff firearm curator. Where do I apply?

I've known Sheriff Gottwald personally for over 25 years. He's a good guy, a firearms enthusiast, and has been an FFL for decades. He's vocalizing frustration with the new law that has taken away options once available to a sheriff for the firearms of those with PFAs. Sheriffs have sole responsibility for storing and curating such firearms, and no facility, budget, or manpower to do so. Previously, friends and other family of the PFA recipient were options; not so much now.
