Anyone know how to fix this?
Just received my Romanian WASR AK on friday. It's in remarkably great shape except for one minor flaw (See totally crappy quality cell phone picture below...)
Attachment 14397
The front cap on the upper hanguard is bent out. You can kinda see from my D minus quality image the line of the lip of the wood, which is where the cap should be.
Is there actually anyway of fixing this without damaging the finish, or more importantly, the gas tube itself?
I know I could replace the whole gas tube, but where do I get one? Apexgunparts.com lists them in their add in Shotgun News, but not on their website. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
Re: Anyone know how to fix this?
remove the wood by clamping the receiver end of the gas tube in a vise by the flats.
wear a glove, and twist the wood off the gas tube
tape the bent out part to protect the finish, then tap it carefully with a hammer til its back in.
reinstall wood.
thats really it... its an AK, not a museum quality show piece:D

+1
The HG retainer almost looks cut wrong, but if it's just bent follow Jaybell's instructions.
Re: Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks guys. LIke I said it's a crappy picture, but it's definately bent. Wasn't sure if I could go banging away at it, since it looks like the hanguard retainer is just crimped around the gas tube like corrugated drain pipe (i haven't yet taken the wood off so I'm only going on what the outside looks like).
Seems pretty straight forward though, I'll give it a try when I get home from work.
Thanks again.

Update:
I'll spare you another grainy picture, but did exactly what you guys said when I got home last night. It actually took longer to strip the gun than bend the cap back straight.
Long story short... Good as new.
Thanks again guys.
