Attorney General Jeff Sessions directed the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday to “increase prosecutions of gun-law violations” so that suspects know they will pay a price for using guns in crime.
He also redirected the DOJ to take a harder stance against “violent crime” in general.
According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Sessions said “state and local people” with whom he has spoken have already expressed concern “about a lack of federal support and leadership.”
Sessions spoke of his support for “a 1990s-era effort that sought harsh sentences for felons caught with firearms as a way to reduce violent crime through increased gun prosecutions.” He said of offenders who use guns, “If they know they will get popped, they go into federal court and get five years. … It does have an intimidating effect, and we’ve lost a little bit of that.”
WSJ noted that Sessions’ posture toward harsh penalties and increased prosecution “represents something of a shift from Obama administration efforts to reduce sentences for low-level nonviolent drug offenders.” But it also seems to be exactly what leaders in some cities, such as Chicago, are seeking.
On January 8, Breitbart News reported that Chicago Police Board Chairwoman Lori Lightfoot pointed to a dearth of prosecutions in Chicago and said the city needed help.
NPR quoted Lightfoot as saying, “We need to have more federal gun prosecutions in Chicago. Our federal partners from the U.S. attorney’s office, the ATF, the FBI need to be much more invested in this overall strategy. Chicago Police Department cannot tackle this issue by itself.”

A good thing! The non-enforcement of our laws is EXACTLY why we have so much disrespect for our laws!

FIFY :)
Re: AG Sessions Directs DOJ to ‘Increase Prosecutions of Gun-Law Violations’
How about if we repeal some of the worthless, stupid, freedom limiting gun control laws first, then prosecute the meaningful ones.

Prosecutions are often a waste if they don't lead to convictions.

"...Chicago Police Department cannot tackle this issue by itself.” YES THEY CAN, they can charge the perps with the firearms laws that are on the books and the DA doesn't have to accept a plea deal. Do that at the state level AND have the feds charge them with the federal crimes AND NOT BACK DOWN. Then the FBT's (f**king bad types) will get the message.
That in turn might help stimulate the economy - more prison space needed so more are built meaning construction jobs, then more corrections officers will be needed (more jobs), food for the prisoners is needed (help for the farmers/ranchers/migrant workers/trucking companies/truck manufacturers), etc. See, imprison the a**holes and help the economy :)

prisons should be run like sweat shops. the people in them need to be repaying their debt to society, as well as the cost of their incarceration.

Of course they can do it. Chicago just does not want to do it. They would rather stick their heads in the sand and take comfort in their gun ban laws, which make victims of the citizens they are supposed to care about. This is thinly disguised "but we need a centralized federal solution to law enforcement nationally" nonsense coming out of the relentlessy socialist states and big cities. They will squander whatever Federal resources are sent their way and what is not squandered will be channeled to destroying the Second Amendment. Until there is a major political change in Illinois generally and Chicago specifically, none of that is changing.
I would not want to see so much as an additional dollar find its way to that corrupt socialist strong arm thug, Rahm Emmanuel. He was a criminal with the Clinton gang and has only become worse.

I see nothing wrong with convict labor to harvest crops. Bring back the chain gangs.
