Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I was in the Walmart on the north side of State College, picking up cat food and shampoo and I decided to waltz over to the sporting goods and grab 4-5 boxes of Winchester 100rnd value pack 9mm. As usual, nobody was working there, and after dinging the bell a thousand times, somebody finally showed up at the counter.
I told him I wanted some ammo, and he said, "I need to scan your drivers license." I asked, "What the hell for?" He said for proof of age. I said, "Uh, you can look at it but you can't scan it." He insisted on scanning it for anyone who looks 27 or younger. I told him that's bullshit, I'm over 40 and I look nowhere near 27. I said NO thanks, and walked away.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
Ask to see a manger or someone that knows something. Thats BS.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
That's the 1st time I have ever heard about this??? WTF??
What Wall Mart was this?
I have purchased Ammo in about 7 different wallmarts throughout Allegheny & Westmoreland counties....thats Bull Sh*t man, I would have walk out too....

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
Never heard of the license scan non-sense, will there be more to the story? Troopers, LP's or anything? just kidding of course.;)

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
Looks like a source of inexpens... I mean, less expensive ammo has dried up if they institute that here.
I'm not giving them anything to scan.
That said, how hard is it going to be to get folks to accept the "REAL ID" thing?
If you want/need something badly enough, most will comply.
OK, back on topic...

I'd just be like "Have at it...". I don't care. Do you even know what sort of shit is even stored there on the scanable strip? What do they gain?
And along the same lines....the kid behind the counter can, in no way, seem to benefit from scanning (assuming it was a scam).
I wouldn't mind. I want cheap ammo.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
This is complete and total BS! After my last visit to WM I swear to god I have darkened their door for the last time!!!
Just like you said, I waited forever for someone to show up to the ammo counter. Then waited almost 45 minutes to check out with the other 5 things we'd bought that day.
Of course they only had 2 of the 25 registers open, and lines 20 people deep.
And to think that for this we shipped all our Manufacturing jobs to China!!!

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
Just rub your license on that thing they use to deactivate the security tags in merchandise.....or a strong magnet. Then they can scan all they want, nothing will be there and they'll have to actually look at it, anyway. ;)
While we're on the subject, what all IS stored on that stripe?

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
This prob just the moron at walmart and bad training.
We used to have scanners for ID's at my store, all they did was confirm it was a vaild ID and display the age. We used to have people use them because obviously looking at a date on the card and doing the math is too hard.
Seriosly though, anyone who ever bought cigs or alchohol underage knows, just habd them an ID and they will serve you. Doesnt have to be yours, or look like you, or matter if its expired. People just dont look.
So we used to have them scan them.
There is no law though, or even a "have to" store policy.
If the customers doesnt like it, fine. who cares?
I always tell my clerks That all I really care about is following the law, and making sure they leave with less money then when they came in.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I've scanned mine before where I work (I work for a company that processes and encodes gift cards). I don't think there is anything on the mag stripe that isn't on the front of the card. I'll have to swipe it again when I get to work on Monday and find out for sure. I'll let you all know.
-
Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
walmart always scans mine its proof they sold ammo to a adult
-
Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I don't think I have ever even been asked to show ID when buying ammo there.
-
Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I surely don't think you have anything to worry about having your ID scanned at Walmart... If we act this paranoid, we won't recruit many new individuals to our side.
What did you think? Walmart now has a database of what you bought and how many 9mm rounds are in your basement?? Cmon...
Wait, did you pay with plastic? (uhh oh...) Or do you only buy anything firearms related with untraceable small denomination bills?
If we act like we're doing something wrong, then we're only reinforcing that very misconception in those minds who are, as of yet, undecided...

Haha... But that's the weird sense of things I was getting from this thread.
I read all of the posts, but I don't remember if the OP was clad with a tin foil cap. I just can't understand how people can get so paranoid that it starts dictating odd choices. But, I guess that's why the creditors are makin big buck selling (ooo ahhhh) "identity theft protection". It's all the same. Just playing on uninformed fears...

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I don't think it's an odd choice not to want your private info scanned by China-Mart! Will you also be ok with retina scans that remember your shopping preferences and won't let you buy donuts because your doctor said no? Stange days are ahead my friends...buy more ammo! (Just not at Wally World!) LOL
-
I understand your concern
But your purchase was in a college town. The ordinance may be a local one or just something that Walmart chooses to do to cover their ass in case of any shootings at the school.
The magnetic strip reader is being used state wide in PA for use in bars to id check the patrons. and every one should be checked no matter the age. cause if a problem arrises about an underage purchase the owner of the establishment can tell the authorities i check ID of everyone period. And if you don't have your id then you don't get served or the pleasure of buying from that establishment (and does it really hurt the two seconds it takes to swipe the card) and if you have driven to anywhere with out your license then you have already broken some other rules as well.
any ways support you local gun store first, price may be higher but the service and quality of service will be first rate. In state college, clearfield is not terribly far away to go to grices or bob's, I am sure their are others closer yet.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
WW has never asked me for ID.
I pay cash for most everything
I once had a teenage girl at Walgrens ask for my driver's license when I was buying a pack of cigarettes, I said you are kidding right........the assistant manager said I'll take it, to her. He looked at me and smiled..........I was 55 at the time........:D

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
There are machines out there that will give up every bit of info on you that anyone could want ( I know, we have one at work. And I do mean anything) I don't think scanning your drivers license is that big a deal. Might be different if my bank records were kept on it too.
The retina scan will only show that I have a very sever astigmatism. Which hopefully would lead them to offering me a discount at the eye glass department.
It's a messed up world as it is. Try not to make it seem worse than it is.

Yes I know what is on it currently as I have a utility that will allow you to scan your PADL into a jpg and then read what is on it. Currently not a whole lot of harm PADL# DOB and I think 2 other items are on it. The problem it it will not stay thins way. Much more is going top be placed on that bar code once PA has fully implemented the PADL as a National ID card as most of the other have already done. I would never allow my PADL to be scanned by anyone except LEO and for proper cause.

That wont work as there is a bar code on your DL that can be read by the checkout scanner that reads the same bar code on products for price and inventory.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I had a similar experience @ the Walmart in Chippewa when I was on my way to the Chippewa Range to do some shooting.
I walked over to the sporting goods section and there were two walmartians behind the counter; a man and a woman. The man takes my order of three 20rd boxes of .223 Remington ammo. When he rings them up he asks for my ID. I asked, "For what?"
The woman, who just finished watching him get the ammo for me, says in the snottiest voice I've ever heard, "Sir, you HAVE to present ID when buying ammunition."
I looked over at her and replied, "Not for rifle ammo, only pistol. You may want to check the law on that." I then turned to the gentleman and said, "Do I look too young to buy ammo? How much do I owe you for this?"
He didn't know what to say/do. Little miss snotty said if I didn't present my ID, I couldn't buy ammo.
I didn't buy ammo that day. And as far as I'm concerned, I'll not buy from that store again. I followed up by stopping at the customer service counter on the way out and explained my position on it, and the lady at the counter didn't seem to care. I chalked it up to her having the 'it's not my problem' syndrome.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I HATE having my license scanned by anyone, especially doormen and people with handheld scanners. I have defaced my magnetic strip and barcode since I was 16. If all you need to do is check age there is no need to scan. I know this technically makes my license invalid, but I have taken more heat from friends and family then anyone else. Bouncers with the little scanners hate it, but still let me in. I have also been pulled over about 15 times and maybe once or twice an officer has told me about it, but never given me any other grief. That being said I also don't use those store cards like the advantage card and try not to shop at places that use those systems. They use those systems to create huge databases of our spending habits and I see no need to identify yourself and link yourself to every purchase you make.
No license scan
No store club cards
No debit cards
CASH AND CARRY!

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
This is B.S.
What happens as more and more personal info is added to the DL?
My credit union wanted to scan my DL. I said no and the manager told me since enactment of the patriot act, they were obligated to ID everyone. I said B.S. and that it was only for amounts over 10K. I told her I would be happy to let the teller look at it but no way would I allow them to scan it. I told them I'd close my account if it came to that.
Everybody and their freakin' brother wants our SS# and now they want to scan DL's. Where does it all end? You know the NRA program "refuse to be a victim"? Well I "refuse to be a criminal" and "guilty until proven innocent" in the eyes of retailers and financial institutions.
They can kiss my a$$.

It is our own fault. We like to buy as cheap as we can and that is where they make it cheaply. Whenever I have a choice and the price difference isn't too outrageous I buy American made or assembled products.
At Wally World I have been asked, when purchasing ammo that can be used in pistols, if I am under 18. I OBVIOUSLY am not and look much older. These clerks have to do their job. If you are going to get upset and make a scene then at least call a manager first and request an explanation.
If you get mad and just walk away you are agreeing to their terms of service!

I do not shop at Wal Mart. I don't care for their stupid rules and do not like the way they treat their employees.

The problem with most Wal-Mart stores is that when in the Sporting Goods Dept, you may not always get someone who is actually trained on how to work in that department. I think that we are starting to immediately shout WTF anytime anyone questions us for anything. The guy probably didn't know any better and thought he was doing the right thing. You should have went up to the tobacco line and bought a pack of cigarettes. That's why that strip is there, so that retailers and bars can check your ID without worrying if it may be a fake. I bet this is extremely more important in a college town. I think that you need to lighten up a bit. If he would have pulled out the PICS form, then start complaining.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
All kidding aside, I think the main point here is that if we just quietly let everyone and their brother scan our info...pretty soon we will be nothing more that sheeple! As someone said, DL's will continue to contain more and more personal info about us and I really don't see where Wally World needs that information at their fingertips. You don't think they want to track you and your habits? Just look at the cookies they leave in you computer after visiting walmart.com! :D

The only info that can be in that strip is what is on the front of the license. I just checked my DL again and I fail to see my SS# on there anywhere. The purpose of that strip is so that businesses can quickly and easily verify that you are WHO YOU CLAIM TO BE. I can't believe how parinoid some people are about this.

Speaking of that alot of places are asking for your fingerprint. My girlfriend always cashes her paycheck at giant eagle and gives her fingerprint without the slightest hesitation, despite how much I hate it. Also one time she tried to take me tanning. I wasn't all that excited about it in the first place but I worked outside and my ass would glow in the dark compared to the rest of my body. Everything was going fine and the girl was only asking perdinent questions like "how often do you tan, do you burn easily?" which I was fine with. Then she pulls out a fingerprint scanner and says "place your right index finger on the scanner so I can open your account." I looked at her like she was totally retarded and said politely "is there any way we can do this without my fingerprint? I don't like to give out my biometrics." NOPE "this is how we keep other people from using your account." I have never seen anything so stupid in my life. I refused and waited for my girlfriend. The thing that bothered me the most is that in the 15 min. I waited there about 10 ditsy ass girls walked up and scanned thier fingerprints. And MY GIRLFRIEND is one of them. People are getting really stupid and accepting anything retailers want without question. Zip codes, Phone numbers, FINGERPRINTS!
I just don't get it.

Re: Walmart wants to SCAN my drivers license! WTF!?!?
I am WAY, WAY far from any type of "conspiracy nut", but I see these things as little steps in the process of you and I losing all control of our private lives.
It's nobody's business how many bags of dog food I buy. It's nobody's business what kind of TP I use to wipe my ass. It's also nobody's business what I buy in the sporting goods department at W-mart.
I'm not saying that I think that there's any "private info" on my DL that they can be used to compile a database on my spending habits. Not yet.
Little steps.
This isn't something that should be a foreign concept to anyone, especially those who are concerned for their rights as gun owners... I mean, if "the government" suddenly announced that we all needed to be issued "ID cards"(which would likely be named something that sounded "warm and fuzzy", like a "United & Safe" card, or something)in order to purchase anything that fell into a category that was even slightly regulated by the government,(Food, medicine, travel, gasoline, etc.)people would be marching in the streets.
Introduce the technology to do so, in a way that doesn't cause alarm, and BENEFITS the consumer, and you have yourself the recipe for success.
The antis use the same method, and it seems to be working pretty well.
Maybe I am a conspiracy nut?

Speculation=paranoia... Lots of things could happen, but until they do they are just a bunch of what ifs....
