Has anyone ever lived in Alaska?
Has anyone ever lived in Alaska?
If so:
Is it true that each resident gets $2,000 per year from the oil companies just for living there?
I've heard that it's hard to get things shipped from the lower 48 states, any truth to that?
I'll have more questions later :)
Re: Has anyone ever lived in Alaska?
Yes the check is called the alaska permanent fund it is proceeds of the money the state gets from oil drilling
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_Permanent_Fund
but the check is pointless because everything is so much more expensive . (in anchorage the prices usually double the lower 48 ) if you live in the villages the prices are more like 3 or 4 times what you would pay everywhere else
Look at these prices at a Mcdonalds in juneau .

and yes it is harder to get things by mail especially if you live in one of the villages .
it is extremely difficult to get mail-order ammo . most places won't ship anywhere in AK
but the beauty of the state makes up for all of this :D
Re: Has anyone ever lived in Alaska?
My brother lives in Palmer, Alaska, a little north of Anchorage.
The state does pay an annual amount, which I think varies from year to year, to residents. I think it is a type of royalty from the oil taxes.
Shipping things is a bit costly and slow compared to what we have in the lower 48, but that's to be expected. It's a long haul up there.
I shipped about 100 pounds of salmon, ling cod, and halibut back home last summer and the processing and shipping cost were more than the fishing charter. Things are pretty expensive, but the wages are higher as well.
I love Alaska and think I could live there. I know my brother loves it and has been there over twenty years since he left the Navy. We are originally from Indianapolis.

What's the cost of living like otherwise? I'm looking into a job that's about 50k/year. Seems like a lot to me but not if the cost of living is so much higher.
