I was wondering is it possible to switch uppers on my ar15 and replace it with a 308? I don’t want to purchase another whole kit but would like to just buy a different caliber upper.

Different lowers completely.
7.62x51 won't work but you can get a 7.62X39 upper for an AR15 lower.
.
also 308 AR pattern rifles are not all interchangeable either. the 2 main patterns are the armalite (the AR-10) and dpms (LR-308)
308 is too long for the AR 15, but you can still change calibers.
as mentioned - 7.62x39
7.62x35 aka .300BLK
I just built a .458Socom. It's competitors would be .450 Bushmaster or the .50 beowulf.
Probably a few more I'm totally clueless about. I don't remember if 6.8 fits AR15?
below is a list of calibers that work in a Ar15 lower. There are some bolt action uppers that fit the lower but they will not feed through the mag well, i.e. 50 bmg.

Thank you all for your help.
Probably will go with 7.62 by 39 as I don't want to reload and it's cheaper than a 300 blackout.
