Senate approves bill to allow guns in schools
School districts that let employees carry firearms on school grounds to help protect students would have to abide by certain ground rules, including training requirements and psychological evaluations for those employees, under legislation approved by state senators Wednesday.
The bill passed, 28-22, after an emotional hour-long debate in which opponents contended that allowing guns in the hands of civilian school employees would make children less safe and read a letter on the Senate floor from educators who survived the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut.
The bill was backed by 26 Republicans and two Democrats, while 14 Democrats — including every Philadelphian — voted with all eight Republicans from southeastern Pennsylvania districts against it.

Having guns wouldn’t have made them or their students safer, the educators wrote.
Really? You are telling me that if one of those teachers, or someone else in the area had a gun, they would not have had the chance to stop the shooter and save lives? Not sure how that logic works out.
I have thought about what to do if there is ever an active shooter in my school. In most scenarios, having a firearm would help give me and my students a chance. I don't have a choice, but if I did I would choose to be able to most effectively protect myself and my students.

Extremely difficult, we have a lot of "democrats" in Phila and surrounding areas.

Maybe the politicians are on to something...after all, most educators are liberal. Would you trust a liberal educator with a gun? Heck, I don't trust a liberal educator with my kids!
I feel they should open it up to parents of kids attending school. Training and all of the above to make sure they are well qualified. Some sort of modified Police academy and shooting course.

Maybe our side should have had this Sandy Hook victim's parent speak.

I compete with at least one school teacher who would really love to be able carry at work. I know of at least one other, with whom I attended school back in the day. So...
There were a number of amendments to this bill that violate parts of PA statutes, most importantly regarding record keeping, so it would have been better had it passed without them. I'm fairly certain, however, that's not *why* the no votes were no votes...

Philly should be part of New Jersey. Need to work on that.

I'd be happy if Philly seceded altogether. I hear that one of the teachers' unions (PFT?) was against the bill. I can't, for the life of me, see why. It's not mandatory that they carry and if they want to it's a good thing. And Wolf is a dem.
