Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
Ive been shooting for many years and never thought to save the brass until a buddy of mine said i should save it and sell it to a scrap yard. Ive seen a couple post but they were from years ago. Does anyone here do this? I see someone says they dont want .22 why is that? I always gather them up and throw them in the junk anyway when im done. Its a private range so you unlock the gate when you go in and theres no one there running it just have to pay yearly dues for a key. So i try to clean up after im done. Is there different types of brass like #1 and #2 so i know what to ask when i call them?
Re: Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
I have seen buckets of casings at my local scrap yard, so I think they take them.
Ill give you a tip though......Re loaders will give you 3-4X what their worth in scrap.

Some do, some dont. We used to take casings at my uncle's recycling center in DuBois.

Would you have to pop out old primers or are they made of brass too.

What he said^^^^
If you have a bunch of 9mm, 357 Sig or Mag, .45 ACP, .380, .38 special, I'd be interested in buying it from you.
Re: Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
Brass is paying about $1.50 a pound at the moment. It takes a lot of .22 shells to make a pound; not quite so many once-reloaded shells, though.
Re: Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
I couldnt even count how many once fired 9mm, 45 acp, and .223 ive thrown away. What was i thinking someone should slap me lol.
Re: Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
A 4/5ths full 5 gallon bucket gets me $85. That varies widely but as a median it's about right. The actual price per pound is a market value thing, changes constantly according to supply and demand. Why 4/5ths you ask. Cause a full one is just more weight than I care to pick up. I can let you know tomorrow, I have a partial bucket to drop off. I'll post per pound price.
Re: Will a scrap yard buy used brass?
Last I knew, "CONSERVIT" in Hagerstown, MD, was buying it, but I concur with RaisedByWolves, centerfire brass is worth considerably more to reloaders than the scrap yard will pay for it.
However, 22 rimfire is a scrapyard proposition, except for the very, very, VERY few reloaders who will swage the 22 case into a jacket for a small-caliber bullet. Yes, Virginia. There are people who did just that during WWII, when bullets were not at all available for the civilian market, and some die-hard reloaders (Vernon Speer comes to mind) actually did make bullets out of old fired 22RF cases. It was not too economical then, and that is still the case today, but to prove a point - it CAN be done.
